DQ Anyone?

Not Dairy Queen, although I could go for some of that right now, but Dragon Quest. I played a little bit of Dragon Quest XI on my PS4 today.

Dragon Quest XI: From Dragon Quest I to Dragon Quest XI, how far this series has come. What's that, 34 years thereabouts? From 2D 8-bit pixelated environments to giant set pieces of gorgeous detail, DQXI looks pretty great. You could say, with turn-based battles, the series hasn't in essence changed much but I'm glad for that. Although I liked the action-time battle system in Final Fantasy IV, I could never get into it with FFXII and beyond. DQ has remained true to it's roots and I appreciate that.

Well, I restated DQ XI for the third time and got a level farther but am still escaping the dungeons. It's funny how one plays a game differently every time. This time I spent some time in the central city of Helio. . .  something or other and completed a few side quests, found some extra treasure and bought some more equipment. I think the last few times I just blasted through there without exploring much. On the other hand though, I didn't explore much getting there like I did before. I just galloped through the wilderness, skipping most of the excounters and avoiding all side routes. I've been automating most battles too this time. I used tactics and set everyone to "heal first" and the "mix it up" later. I kind of want to automate the battles right now and do more exploring.

I'm playing this at home where I usually don't get much time, but hopefully I'll get a hour in here and there to get much further in this game.

I love DQ11. But I hit the wall about 17 hours in, and I haven't played it for a few months. I really want to get back to it though. It's a great game.

I got to keep up with it this time. If I let too much time go by, I restart it at the beginning because I forget how to do everything.

Dragon Quest has adapted so well because of its basic design. All it needed was graphics to do the Akira Toriyama artwork justice in 3-D, and it had those as of DQVIII. Plus, unlike Final Fantasy, whose original creative team is long gone after the FF movie failed, and has been handed around to multiple designers, Dragon Quest still has the same three core designers behind it - Toriyama, Yuji Hori, and Koichi Sugiyama.

I'm thinking of getting a copy of DQ 1 for NES again. I put away my Game Boy Player because of space concerns but I really want to get back to it.

Dairy Queen should do a Dragon Quest promotion with their Blizzards!  Actually a yogurt place did a DQ promo a couple of years ago.

Do you have Netflix?  There is a DQ computer animated movie on it now.

I remember that blog of yours.

I have Netflix free 'til the end of the month. I'll have to check for that movie tomorrow. Thanks!

Finished the entire game on PS4. It really doesn't start until you think you're at the end.

Then bought it again for Switch. That is the definitive version. Lots of extra content that fills in a lot of blanks. I'm only at the let's pretend final dungeon but other stuff pulled me away.

That Switch version does sound definitive.

Bought this on Switch not too long ago. Haven't played much of it there, but I really enjoyed what I did play. Speaking of the history, on Switch you can "switch" between an old snes style and modern. It's cool, and you can really see how much the series has progressed if you do it that way.

Stop that. I want a Switch more than every now.
