I guess a lot of people were watching American Idol and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest; playing Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, listening to High School Musical and reading yet another James Patterson book, but I was somewhere else (except for Pirates, I do like those movies). Below describes just where.

TV: Korgoth of Barbaria

Actually a show that never happened on Comedy Central's [cor. Catoon Network's] Adult Swim. I was already there watching Venture Brothers and Robot Chicken, so when I saw the pilot episode for this upcoming show Korgoth of Barbaria, I was thrilled, and then disappointed because it never came out. I still watch the pilot every so often, though. It's a gem of comedy and bloody nonsense. It's basically Conan and the best DnD adventure you never played. Its zany one-liners have stayed part of my looney weekend game session banter.

Film: Idiocracy

This film was very funny at the time, but boy has it stuck with me. I'm still thinking about it fifteen years later. In a way, society is always in a state of idiocracy as its wealthy try to keep the citizens as ignorant as possible of its conspiracies.

Game: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I got a Xbox 360 the summer of '06 just for Oblivion. I still have a vivid memory of trying to play as an alchemist and then getting killed by goblins while hunting mushrooms in a cave. Ah, what could have been a long interesting career selling potions turned to dust. I continued on as various other classes, got a little farther each time, got killed each time. I never did finish the game, even when I went back to it a few years ago with a guide. I still have a strong urge to revisit it and see what more I can do.

Music: Beatles - Love

I like the Beatles, but I wouldn't call myself a rabid fan or anything. I always went for progressive and psychedelic rock from that period, but the Beatles had many of these elements too, so they've always been in my collection. So, when the Cirque du Soleil show about them came out that year, I was very interested. My brother-in-law is a much bigger fan than me and saw the show with his family. I got the soundtrack from the library thinking it was just going to be another compilation. I was wrong. This is a careful remixing of Beatles tracks by Beatles producer George Martin. The vocals seem to be right there with you. I nearly cried listening to it for the new level of intimacy it shares of the fab four - a hugely worthy listen.

Book: Halo Graphic Novel

I rediscovered comics with the Halo Graphic Novel. I was soon doing the Wednesday routine of buying new comics and continued that for nearly a decade later. I think the Halo Graphic Novel was pretty good. My favorite story of this multi-story graphic novel was, Second Sunrise Over New Mombasa. Moebius' art work on that one is so fun to look at.

What did you see, play, hear, or read in 2006?

In 2006, I was living in New York, smoking a lot of weed, touring with my band, and going back and forth between feeling great and feeling paranoid and depressed. I miss NYC, but they were weird times.

I was playing KOTOR 1 and 2, and the Gamecube Hulk game, and Final Fantasy 12.

I remember my friend being really into that Hulk game. I think I played it too.

I got to go finish KotoR.

Adult Swim was Cartoon Network, not Comedy Central.

2006 was a really good year for gaming.  The Wii came out that year, along with games like Twilight Princess and Wii Sports.  I have a lot of good memories waiting in line to get a Wii with my brother Jeff.  But there was a game I liked even better than Twilight Princess, and that was Okami on the PS2.  It was my GOTY for 2006.

2006 was both a good and bad year for me.  In August of 2006, I lost my job at the church.  I really liked that job, too.  But luckily by the end of the year, I got another job working at a place that sold things to hospital gift shops and such.  I didn't like that job as much, but the people were nicer, and I worked there for almost 9 years.

I didn't get a 360 until 2007.  The game that caused me to finally cave in and get a 360 was Pac-Man: Championship Edition.

Oh yeah. Always swapping those two in my brain.

I really liked Okami too and even played it that year. I still haven't finished it.

I love the Wisecrack video on Idiocracy. Worth a watch.

Korgoth reminds me of Dethklok.

We have about the same thoughts on The Beatles.

Oh yeah, that was a great video. I had the same feelings of ambiguity about whether it was on-the-nose or just paranoid.

Totally Dethklok, another show I watched that year.
