My Media Scrapbook for 2007

Did you watch Dancing with the Stars, see Shrek the Third, play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, listen to Nickelback and read John Grisham's Playing for Pizza? No? Well, maybe you caught some of what I took in.

TV: Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job

Another Adult Swim favorite of mine. I must've watched nothing but Adult Swim shows during these Bush years. Skit comedy is one of my favorite types of show. You never know what's going to come up next, and this is especially true for Tim and Eric. Their skits are bizzare, surreal, silly, and sometimes uncomfortable. There are many cameos from famous people. I thought for a while that John C. Riley got his start on Tim and Eric as Dr. Broole, but he was already successful before this. It was the first time I saw him in anything, though. Tim and Eric came from a town very close to mine. I'd like them, though, even if they weren't.

Film: Hot Fuzz

Remember Shawn of the Dead? This stars the same two buffoons, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. As with a lot of British TV and film, this is a joke about the difference between urban and rural Britain. Simon is the urban cop and Nick is the country cop. Hilarity ensues as Simon tires too hard to do police work in a town where nothing happens. When something does happen, we get to see how Nick reacts. These two are a great team. They did that alien movie Paul after this, but nothing since. I wish they'd do another.

Game: Crackdown

A sleeper hit if their ever was one. A lot of people bought it for the Halo 3 beta code that came with it, but it turned out to be a very worthy game. Imagine GTA but with great shooting and traversal mechanics. Sure, GTA's got better stories and more interesting city details, but the action is what calls me, and Crackdown called me good. My friend and I played this like crazy both solo and co-op. I never did get every single special orb though. That world was too darn big to track them all down.

Music: Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix soundtrack

There is a soundtrack on youtube, but how to get a physical one is a question I'd love answered. The end credits music is my favorite track (shown above). It's a fresh, childlike melody that just brims with charm and innocence. It makes me wish for a moment of pure carefree joy.

Book: J.R.R. Tolkien - Children of Hurin

Tolkien's son Christopher put this together from his father's unfinished manuscripts. It's about a man named Turin, son of Hurin, and his troubled and wandering life. It's a sad tale full of desperate dealings with the evil minions of Morgoth like the deceiving dragon Glaurung. It's a dark tale. I kind of love it for that. It was the first new Tolkien book I had read since 1977's Silmarillion.

Hot Fuzz is one of ny favorite movies. Have you seen At the World's End? i'm fairly sure that came out after Paul. I could be wrong.

In 2007, I was 17 and I'm honestly not sure what the hell I was doing.

2007 is when I got an Xbox 360, which became one of my favorite consoles. Not number one, but at least in the top five. That year I did give my GOTY to Super Mario Galaxy, but looking back, I would've gave it to Portal had I played it that year.

I still haven't finished Portal. That area where you bounce around alot got me stuck.

In 2007 Futurama made quite a revival. My wife and I both loved that. In fact, we were on vacation and watched the series finale together a few years later.

I took a few classes at The University of Oklahoma that year. Gamingwise, I started out with Rogue Galaxy on PS2. Then I finally found a Wii. I got Mario Galaxy and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for that. Good system, but it had a bit of a lull mid-life. It ended with a heck of a bang with Xenoblade Chronicles though. It was around the time of the Wii that I joined 1UP as well. That was 13 years ago.

I got a 360 for Virtua Fighter 5 Online. That was actually a leap of faith. I was notoriously anti-Microsoft, especially after Windows Vista, which was a buggy disaster of a OS. The 360, as it ended up, ultimately only ended up reinforcing my bias against Microsoft a year later, but I did enjoy playing fighting games and even Halo 3 for awhile. Plus, Microsoft was buying up a bunch of Japanese RPGs (grrr).

Rogue Galaxy. I still have that game. I played only a few hours of it though. I've always wanted to finish it. I remember scanning in some great two-page ads for the game from some comics I had.

I went from Milenium edition to windows 7 and missed that Vista fiasco.

I didn't see a lot of movies between 2005-2007. I did see A Scanner Darkly, Spiderman 3, and Woody Allen's Match Point. Didn't really like any of those (and I read the book of Scanner Darkly).

I was playing a lot of KOTOR that year. 2007 was the year I left NYC and moved back home to Maryland, where I played outrageous amounts of Modern Warfare.

You remind me I must go finish Kotor. I got up to the :"meat-bags" assassin droid, what was its name, HK-48 or something like that? Great story.

I had to look up who was on DWTS in 2007 and I enjoyed this season. It had Jeanie Garth and Julianne Hough, both I really liked. My go to shows during this was Mad Men, Californication, and I think this was the time when I was catching up/rewatching The Sopranos.

I have a slight interest in the costumed singer show around recently. I forget what it's called.

I've always wanted to check out Mad Men.
