Physical Purchases. Remember Those?

I've been hunting around for games for my personal library at Gamestops the last few days, like I used to all the time in the 2010s. I found two out of three I was looking for yesterday (Valkyria Chronicles (PS3), Gears of War 3 (X360) - $2 and $1 respectively), and at the store I went to today, found nothing. But I noticed a buy-4-for-$30 (all must be under $15) sale and found some stuff I wanted. It works out to $7.50 a game, which is pretty good. Here's a picture:

Flatout 4: I was a fan of the first Flatout on OG Xbox, and I've followed the series ever since. I haven't always liked Bugbear's sequels, but there's always a chance I'll love the next one.

Sudden Strike: Complete Collection: I've been wanting this game since it came out. It's an RTS in a realistic setting. I think it's WWII, but I forget now. I've been eyeing it in digital sales for a while now. Finally I'll get to try it.

Lord of The Rings Conquest (PS3): I remember seeing gameplay for this way, way back and being really impressed. I always thought it was strickly multiplayer, though, so I never bought it. I'm pretty sure it has a single player campaign, but in any case, I want to see those gorgeous graphics Pandemic put into this.

Trine: The Ultimate Collection: I played the first Trine years ago and absolutely loved the graphics. The gameplay really frustrated me at the time, though. It's a bit like Limbo in that it's a side scrolling action/puzzle game. I'm glad to have them all together on one disc so I can get frustrated times 4 but love every minute of the graphics.

Buy anything physical lately?

I actually choose to buy physical games when they are available. My most recent purchases were Super Mario 3D All-Stars and the Switch version of The Outer Worlds. I guess Microsoft is going to try and indirectly prop up Gamestop, at least for now.

I feel like people must be divided on this issue because both MS and Sony are putting out two consoles, one with disc drive, the other not.

For me, I've really gotten into digital games, but I've decided to keep, or get, physical copies of the GotY games for my library.

I'd say I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo tried a digital only version of the Switch, except that I can't imagine that the cartridge slot costs much to manufacture. If I had all of my Switch games in digital form I'd probably need at least a 2TB SD card. As it is, I still haven't filled up the 256GB card I did put in mine. The Switch version of Witcher 3 didn't even have an install file until CDPR patched it so you could import PC saves. They fit the entire game on a 32GB cartridge.

The discless PS5 is otherwise exactly the same as the regular PS5 in terms of hardware, unlike the XSS which is a heavily stripped down version of the XSX, but file sizes are rapidly going to chew through the storage on both.

I don't like that MS dumbed down the discless XBS. It's essential to me to have the best hardware inside. As for storage, I'm am constantly filling up my 1TB drive on my Xbox One. I'm considering an external drive, but I'm beginning to not mind just redownloading games whenever I need them. I can usually do it through my phone at home and they'll be installed on my XBO when I get to my friend's place on the weekend. I'm used to it now. I wonder, though, how much wear and tear that has on the hard drive.

I know eventually in the future, all games will be digital, but I'll have to be dragged kicking and screaming all the way, as I buy phyiscal whenever I can.  I even do that with games I've reviewed, if i like them enough, like Streets of Rage 4.  The last physical game I bought was Super Mario 3-D All-Stars, and I have physical copies of the Kingdom Hearts music game and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity pre-ordered.

I remember the idea presented at the beginning of the internet age. They said there would be no more need for paper printouts of anything. Apparently, people print more paper documents than ever. It's seems to have increased its use. They also said all business would be done by video conference calls. Turns out, people want to make important deals in person. Also, travel. They said vitual video of holiday spots would reduce travel. It's done the opposite. Go figure.

But games could go the way music has, where it's mostly digital now except for those into retro vinyl and premium CD box sets. I never buy digital music though. It takes the whole fun out of it for me. Games though. I like digital so I can try out stuff, but when I really love a game, I want a copy for my library.

I was just asking a Gamestop salesman if Journey to the Savage Planet has a physical version because I think it might end up being my GotY for 2020. It does, and came out six months after the digital version I've been playing. I'm hoping it wins my personal GotY because I want to own the disc.

Those are pretty cheap games. I don't remember PS2 games being that cheap in the last days of the PS3. I've mostly gone digital in my game purchasing... for a lot of reasons, but I appreciate a lot of people enjoy having hard copies of games.

I feel weird buying digital unless a game is really, really cheap. I just don't feel that digital copies are really copies I own, so they should be cheaper. But I don't need to own a lot of games anyway right now. I'd like to pair down my physical collection to only my very favorite games.

I think that day, I was just hungry to buy something. I'd been to several Gamestops and couldn't find the one game I wanted, so I took advantage of the sale just to have something. Now I'm wondering. How do I put these things in my Xbox to make them play?

I was on an all digital kick for a bit but my last 4 game purchases have all been physical:

Lego Dimensions - 360

WWE Battlegrounds - Switch

Just Cause 4 Day One Edition - PS4

GI Joe Operation Blackout - Switch

My last game was also the first time I stepped into a GameStop in maybe 6 months.

I used to go to different Gamestops almost every day back in 2013 or so. I've recently been in a few but it's not the same. It feels dead and gone already.

The last couple Switch games that I've bought have been physical copies and I'll pick up a used PS3 title if I fancy it. But I'm mostly digital these days. In the case of Xbox One, its less of a hassle when you don't have to switch out game discs so much.

I balked at digital at first but now I prefer it. I am going to get physical copies for my favorites. It's more for the shelf than for actual use, however.
