The year my car tried to kill me. 200K miles and the exhaust manifold started leaking, not that I knew it for almost a year, and gave me a slight, but significant, dose of carbon monoxide poisoning. I don't think I lost any memory (friends might say otherwise) but I had some muscle-weakening problems that haven't totally gone away. I survived though.
TV: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey:
Neil de Grasse Tyson picks up from Carl Sagan and teaches the world about astronomy. I couldn't think of a better guy to take up the mantle from Sagan.
Film: Guardians of the Galaxy:
I saw this three times in the theater with different friends. I felt like it was the new Star Wars for me, I was so thrilled by it. It's just my thing, a space adventure with comedy and a diverse crew of misfits. I want to watch it again.
Game: Earth Defense Force 2025:
I think I discovered the series through this game. It's just a giant monster/robot/insect battle extravaganza. Everything is destructible and hoards of enemies fill the screen. The original Xbox 360 game chugged a little bit from time to time, but when it ran on Xbox One, it was smooth as silk. I still play it today. I just saw a new EDF on the way to the U.S. in a few months, EDF: World Brothers. Only coming to Switch and PS4 though. I need it on Xbox if I want to get my gaming friend into it like we got into 2025. What's with this series anyway. Since 2025, every game has been a PS exclusive.
Music: Behemoth "The Satanist":
I think I acquired a huge collection of modern metal tracks from a promotional collection I picked up at a flea market. "Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel" was on there and I took to it immediately. I love the huge wall of sound, almost orchestral in its largeness, this album brings to metal. It's overwhelming and I love that. I've been a huge fan of Behemoth ever since, but I've struggled to find their other physical albums.
I liked this free verse poetry full of a woman's perspective and lots of interesting metaphors and word associations. You think one of her poems is about one thing and then it's about something else. still mulling that over. Her poems are quirky, funny, and visceral. By her influence, I'm now thinking about looking in a mirror and contemplating the names we give to different body parts. Ha ha.
What was interesting to you in 2014?

2014 was a pretty good year for me. I made a lot of money at my old job, enough to go on a trip to Disney World with my family that year. I even wrote about it at GamerDad.
My GOTY that year was Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. How could I not give it that award since it had Pac-Man, Mega Man, and Kirby in it!

That's cool. I want to play as Kirby.

I haven't read any of Patricia Lockwood's books, but I've read some of her essays online. She can be very insightful and funny too.
I remember that story about your car. Pretty scary.

I'd like to read some of her literary criticism. Could be interesting.
It was a Toyota Scion xA. Probably had about 220K miles on it when it happened. Note to self, ditch car at 200K miles.

Promotional compilations are the best CDs when it comes to discovering new bands. I found a couple of favorite artists that way as well as through soundtracks. 2014 might have been around the time where I was buying a lot of Lego. I believe that's when I got my AT-AT and may have recreated a certain scene from Empire that involved an AT-AT and a Snowspeeder.

Soundtracks have been big for me of late. I don't really have many new bands I follow anymore, so I just get soundtracks to movies I liked and hopefully get surprised by something.
