Back On Comic Wednesdays

I suddenly got the notion to get back into comic reading. I picked up a few things today and will go back every Wednesday to see what's new. I'm not sure I'll follow what I used to, so we'll see, but here's what I got today.

comics

I just read Strange Academy #7 and thought it was okay. It focuses on his students mainly which detract from my interest in Strange himself, but it was cool. I'm not sure I'll follow it further, however.

I also just read Colonel Weird: Cosmogog #4. I'm encouraged by Jeff Lemire as I've read other comics by him that I liked. It was pretty interesting. Since I'm jumping in at issue 4, I'm a little confused as to what's going on. Seems to be about some time travel, alternate realities, dimensions, space travel, and a toy robot that can talk, I'm not entirely sure. I think I will follow this and get a back issue or two next week and figure it all out.

Finally, I started Dr. Strange Epic Collection Volume 4. This is a collection of comics from the years 1975-78, possibly one of those years was the year I first experienced comics, so maybe I'll recognize one of these issues. The first story I started reading has Strange and his new disciple/lover encountering Dormamu's sister on a routine walk in the park. There's never a dull day for the Sorcerer Supreme. I'm loving it.

You know, you'd think I'd be really into comic books, since I like things like video games and cartoons.  But I've never really gotten into them.  I've tried a few times in my life, but they just didn't stick.  It's too hard to get to a comic book store and if you want to keep up with a series, you have to keep buying them and the money can add up.

The closest I've gotten to being into comic books was when I was a kid and learned that the DuckTales cartoon was based off of old Uncle Scrooge comics by Carl Barks.  Then for a while I bought some reprints of old Uncle Scrooge comics to learn more about them.  As well as other Disney Afternoon cartoons turned comics, because I really liked them, too.

Most of my knowledge of comic book characters from Marvel or DC usually only comes from the movies, LEGO games, and Marvel vs. Capcom titles.  Heck, the only reason why I said She-Hulk was my favorite Marvel character is because I thought she was cool in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.  Before then I didn't even know there was such a thing as She Hulk!

What's strange is that even though I never really got into comic books, I have a strong interest in newspaper comic strips.  Always have really, ever since I was a kid.  I love learning about old coimic strips from the early 1900's like Little Nemo in Slumberland, and I've always liked reading newspaper comics like Peanuts, Garfield, Dilbert, and Calvin & Hobbes.  I really miss newspaper comic strips.

Yeah, that's why I stopped a few years ago - too many comics. I was, in order to follow a favorite hero, having to get too many after a while. But, this time I'm being very choosey. I may even find that I'm not that into them anymore. We'll see.

I used to read Far Side and Bloom County quite a bit back in the 80s. Before that I always used to read them in the Sunday paper my Dad got. I'd like to reread some of that stuff again. My library puts the comic strip collections in the stacks with everything else, whereas the graphic novels have their own section now. It's kind of weird that way but things like Garfield and Calin & Hobbes have their own rabid following.

Yeah I liked The Far Side a lot, too.  When I worked in an office, I had many a Far Side calandar.

I went to UT in Austin for college, and the guy who created Bloom County, Berkeley Breathed, also went there and majored in the same school of Journalism that I did.  So they liked to brag about him a lot since he won a Pulitzer Prize.

Calvin and Hobbes is a work of art.  And even though it's not really funny anymore.  I still like Garfield.  Garfield was a big part of my childhood.  A lot of people say Jim Davis sold out, and he kind of did.  But at least back then, he sold out to high quality companies.  For instance, the Garfield cartoon was done by Film Roman, who would later do The Simpsons.  The Garfield animalted speicals would always win the Emmy that year they came out, too.  And food products like Garfield fruit snack and ravioli were actually REALLY good!  Only bad thing is my old cat Chekov back then didn't like the Garfield cat food.  I was such a big Garfield fan as a kid that I was kind of mad at Chekov for not liking it! :)  Chekov only liked one brand of cat food and it was called Happy Cat.

That's neat about Mr. Breathed.

I forgot about Opus. I was a big fan of that one.

I'm trying to get back into comics too, but I'm going to only sprinkle them with superhero stories, and mostly try to read stuff that's more eclectic.

I always go for the weird stuff first especially if it has "strange" or "weird" in the title. haha. I saw other things that were interesting from the big companies, but I'm always a little skeptical at first. An outsider like me is going to probably not like the mainstream stories, but who knows. I ended up being pleasantly surprised by some stuff from the majors last time I was into comics. I only hope I don't find too many to follow. I can only do a few series at once right now.

I like the concept of Comic Book Wednesdays. As someone who doesn't read them much (I really want to finish The Boys) it's interesting to see different titles that I would normally not know anything about. Heck I might get interested in a series you write about and check it out...hopefully it's available digitally.

I think most things are digital now. If I had an ipad I would maybe read digitally. I do like the paper though.
