BaD 2: Assassin's Creed Revelations

I always mean to play the Assassin's Creed games but I never seem to get to them. Luckily my theme for the month, The Renaissance (16th century), fits with the setting of this game, and I already had it probably as a free download from my Games with Gold membership.

In this 2011 game, you play as Desmond Miles who, with the aid of the Animus, relives memories as Ezio (and apparently Altair too) in 1511 Constantinople. I guess this means I can play all the Ezio games for my Renaissance theme, AC II and Brotherhood.

I am playing this really to view the historic environments. I am not a fan of stealth gameplay but I'm muddling through this as best I can. My first assignment seemed doomed to failure as I tried to assassinate the target, who kept getting away. I eventually realized I was only to tail him. Then the game switched to a horse-drawn wagon chase - got to have one of those, even in the 16th century. After failing again at bumping the target's wagon (it seems all I had to do was survive it) I got my man after fighting his entire army of guards. I tried to act stealthy and climb buildings but at this part of the game, it wouldn't let me climb. Strange. I ended up just challenging everyone out in the open and beat them pretty handily by timing my counter-attack after a block. It worked just as well as in the Batman games. Why go offensive when you can let them come to you. I got my target finally and his book that gives clues to finding the keys to a room containing an ultimate weapon to end the Templar/Assassin war. I felt like I was in an Uncharted game for a moment there.

That's where I stopped for the time being. I use achievements to signal me to move on to other games now. I'll return to it next gaming session.

I never got into the Assassin's Creed games, but I watched my brother play one and the only things I can remember about it is that you can fall from 20 stories high and be OK if you land in a tiny haystack.  And you can feed animals by summoning bread crumbs from your hand that wasn't there before!  That's some kind of super power!

I love the haystacks. I sit in there and become a deadly, man gobbling haystack of doom. You can just wait in there and assassinate anyone who walks by and then stow the body in the stack where no one can see. It's like the haystack is a life form. haha

I want to enjoy the history-rich environments, but these are such "check the box" games.

So far it's just brown buildings and rural towns. Not too interesting.

I always liked these games but damn the stealth always got me.

I played some more today but rage quit it. I think there's something quirky about the traversal mechanics. It feels like you can only jump or climb at certain spots. Sometimes I go to jump and nothing happens because that particular wall isn't climbable. Bah! I should be able to climb anything with a edge to it especially after I got the hook device.
