BaD 3: Comics Day 1

There will be four comics Wednesdays this month. Sometimes I get something video game related, but even if I don't, comics go in my toy box with games and miniatures; they all seem to go together. So this is what I got today.

colonel

Colonel Weird: Cosmagog 1-3. I am now up to date on this series since I got #4 last week. I will now understand what's going on.

Normally, back when I was doing this regularly, say. . . 2010 or thereabouts, I would take these comics right over to a coffee and cookie shop nearby and read them over coffee and cookies, but I fear sugar and caffein now so I took them home, and being tired, haven't had a moment to read them. But I will, later tonight over dinner. So let's take a look at its writer Jeff Lemire.

So Jeff has written and illustrated a lot of comics in the 2000s, won Eisner Awards, and basically done a ton of quality work for DC, Marvel, and his own and other indie publishers. I only knew him from the series Trillium which was about a love affair between two people separated by time and space. Time travel, space, and alternate dimensions seem to be recurring interests of Jeff. Well, this goes great with my interest in Dr. Strange and basically all those things he likes including bizarre art and mind-bending stories.

Colonel Weird, I just learned, is a character from his Black Hammer series. This Cosmagog series is just the four issues I now have and tells a sort of back story and future story of that character.

Neato and excelsior! I can't wait until dinner.

It seems like everything he likes goes over my head. I like these stories too, but I have to not question them to enjoy them.

I read the series the other night and I'm still confused. I guess I have to read Black Hammer, but I'm not getting caught in that kind of thing again. I'll be neck-deep in comics.

You know, I've been reading Saga, by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples. It's a really neat comic, and I think you'd like it, but it does have strong sexual and violent content.

I read volume 1 and liked it pretty well. Lemire apparently was heavily influenced by it in his own series.

Man I miss going to a coffee shop and either playing a casual game or just reading what's on Twitter/Reddit, while drinking coffee. Nice pickups!

Thanks. The other problem is COVID. I can't just go and sit anywhere like a Starbucks or the local health food store.

I was at a discount store the other day and they had packages of old comic books you could buy.  But they were all X-Men and Fantastic Four stuff that didn't interest me.  Except according to the covers, apparently She Hulk was part of the Fantastic Four for a while I guess.

I am not so interested in the big titles of Marvel and DC for some reason. I did get some Batman comics once but they were real spinoff stories or side stories, not the main Batman comics. Only Dr. Strange interests me and he was traditionally a less popular character. I don't know now, seems he's pretty big now.
