That's a lot of sports ball.
OG Xbox Journey: OXM Demo #3

It turns out AirForce Delta Storm didn't work and I had to return it, but it was the first demo on Official Xbox Magazine's demo disc 3. So I played it there and everything else that was on it.
I have a lot of these demo discs but this is the first one I have. I'm missing 1 and 2. 3 is from February 2002. Here's a breakdown of what's inside and what I thought of it all.
Demos:
Airforce Delta Storm - You can choose from a number of modern jet fighters and take on three different missions. I usually have a devil of the time with the controls in realistic flight games but I did better than usual. By the third mission, I wasn't doing too badly. I took out many land-based targets and even a few enemy aircraft before their rockets finally widdled down my health to nothing. Your triggers work your tail and the left stick everything else. I always hate not being able to turn on a dime like a bird can. These supersonic aircraft take a while to turn around or the g-forces would kill a pilot. I only wish I could have a larger field of view so I could more easily see where I was going.
Azurik Rise of Perathia - You're a blue guy with a spear who fights off creatures and gathers gems to boost your special attacks. It's okay but the third-person camera is a tad annoying as it can't be locked down as you move.
Mad Dash Racing - This game plays well but the races are so darn chaotic. I lost my way several times. You can pick up special abilities to attack your fellow racers just like in a Mario Kart game. The benefit of running is that you can now race and jump over obstacles at the same time.
NASCAR Thunder 2002 - I actually enjoyed this a bit. I discovered the camera view that I haven't seen elsewhere. It's just ahead of cockpit view so you only see a bit of the car's hood and then the track in first-person. I feel this is a very natural and realistic view. A pure first-person view like you can get in Forza Horizon doesn't show any part of the car which makes me feel insecure about my position on the road.
NFL Fever 2002 - Boy has real-time announcing come a long way in games. This guy just tells you the yards after every play. I thought I would like the gameplay in this but I didn't that much. I didn't feel very much in control of the plays.
NHL Hitz 2002 - I mentioned this game to my friend and he told me he used to play it all the time back then. I now know why. It's fast, hard-hitting, easy to play and the fights are like Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots. Kind of hilarious and fun. In looking at the players I recognized every name. I guess I was following hockey back then. Eric Lindros was on the New York Rangers? I don't remember that.
Features (gameplay vids and interviews):
Wreckless - This a racing game in a city where everything is destructible. I think I remember playing and enjoying it for a while.
Circus Maximus - I played this Roman chariot battling game back then because it had co-op. My friend and I had a few fun times playing it.
Making of NASCAR Thunder 2002 - A very short interview with a dev talking about how they rendered the track, the cars, and mo-capped a real pit crew to get the animations right.
Frank O'Connor in Tokyo - Who was showing copies of OXM bought by people in the street. Interesting that this was when he was working as a writer for OXM. Soon he would be a content manager at Bungie during the Halo 2 and 3 years and then the Franchise Development Director for Halo at 343 Industries for Microsoft. Nice career dude.
Tips - Some short clips of games with tips given.
Plays of the Month - A top ten list of game clips and wacky moments. Remember when it was fun to watch those?
Trailers:
Batman Vengeance - Mark Hammil's Joker voice is all over this. I never played it but I would just to hear him do Joker.
Brute Force - This had co-op so I was interested. I had to twist my friend's arm to get him to play it with me back then because it was a third-person shooter and he didn't like that. It was fun for a few hours, that's all. Not the Halo-killer it was touted to be.
Jetset Radio Future - Ride the rails high above a cityscape to a pounding soundtrack. I think the body animations are pretty good in this.
Star Wars Obi-Wan - Remember that fight between Obi-wan and Darth Maul? How about a whole game of that. I never played it, so maybe it was fine? Looks kind of bland and unexciting to me though.
Next up (and I checked it this time so I know it works) is Nightcaster out that same month of February in 2002, 19 years ago.
