BaD: Shortest Games #1

For BaD I thought I'd reveal the shortest games I played recently that I finished and actually enjoyed.

Often, for fun, I will hunt for a game that will give me mad achievement points so I can compete on my monthly leaderboard on my Xbox. This is just a leaderboard of friends on my friends list. Often I am losing to PhantasyStar77 but this month I believe I won with an astounding 5000+ achievement points, the most I've ever put up in a month. I was way ahead going into the last days, a thousand points or more ahead of the 2nd place holder, when my arch rival, PhantasyStar77, started gaining ground and topped 5000 points too. I stayed ahead by 600 points at the end of the 30th. I didn't have a chance to see the final day, but I think I must've held the lead on the 31st. There's no way to tell now because the points reset for the new month. I consider it a win for once.

Anyway, I'll often scan through the free-to-play games for something and one day I came across Island Saver. This is a free educational game for kids to learn about cleaning up the environment. It's about 5 1/2 hours for the main story according to howlongtobeat.com. I played it much longer because I went for all the achievments and enjoyed it immensely.

It reminds me of games like The Maw and Slime Rancher. You basically go around with a kind of vacume and clean up the island of trash and industrial waste to free the plants and animals. Some of the animals you can then use as mounts to get around faster or fly.

Occasionally, some oily blob monsters appear and you have to shoot them with water to dissolve them (Your vacume is also a kind of gun). It makes things hectic at times, but it was never too difficult to get them all, even the big ones.

There is also some basic banking lessons taught in the game. You extract coins for cleaning things up and can deposite them in a bank to buy upgrades and earn interest. I believe the game was sponsored by a bank in England. It's nothing too complicated though. It was just fun to shoot a bunch of coins into the "bank" which looks like an inflatable pool toy.

There are secrets to find and collectibles. It was just fun exploring and cleaning up the place. The controls were very good and I never had any glitches. There's some light platforming and failures always reset you just before the spot you failed. Easy breezy. I enjoyed it so much I bought the two pieces of DLC for $5 each. I wish there was more to play.

Sounds like a simple version of Super Mario Sunshine.

I should play that someday.

At times like this I'm reminded how broad the game industry really is. I never would have heard of this game—sponsored by the bank of England??—but here it is and a solid game to boot. Glad you enjoyed it.

Yeah, really weird, that bank thing. I saw a trailer for Slime Rancher again. Island Saver is EXACTLY like Slime Rancher down to the building designs. Not the same dev though.

Island Saver sounds interesting.  Especially since you compared it to The Maw.  I loved that one.

I just redownloaded The Maw to see if I missed anything. I have only one achievement left. It's the one you have to play it at 6 different mealtimes of the day: breakfast, brunch, lunch, dunch, dinner, late night feast. I missed one but not sure which. I'll probably never get it. I feel it's Twisted Pixel's best game and they never did another one or anything remotely like it again, darn it.

I miss Twisted Pixel.  I loved their games on the 360.

They got lost doing Oculus Rift games. Is that thing ever going to go mainstream? How do these devs survive doing VR when it seems few people are on board with it?

I don't know how these devs survive when it takes them years and years to make a game!  I just finished reviewing KungFu Kickball, and I first played it at PAX around three years ago!  And it's not that complicated of a game!

I guess they turn a pretty neat profit.

I just wonder what they do for money while the game is in development.
