Sounds like a cool game that would benefit from some difficulty options. I recently downloaded Pixlejunk Monsters on my Vita. Played it some on the PSP back in the day. I ought to give it another whirl.
BaD: Shortest Games #2

A little behind on BaD this year. I don't have a computer at home right now, or, at least, not one with internet, so I'm limited to when I can get to a library. Good thing is, I'm back working at a library 5 days a week. Anyway, this short game is called Monkey King Saga, a game I stumbled upon looking through sales on Xbox. It was under $10 on sale. I forget exactly what I paid.
Monkey King Saga is a tower defense game exactly like Pixlejunk Monsters on Playstation and like that game you control free roaming heroes as well as placing towers.
I was first attracted to it for the art style. The colorful cartoon-like presentation is lush and charming.
If there's a story, I didn't notice much. You progress across many different locations, battle mini-bosses until a final boss battle.
It was a surprisingly easy game for me. I beat the campaign in a single day winning every achievement along the way. It should have made me happy but sometimes you can get something too easily. I had little reason to play the challenge levels or get three stars on every level except that I love the gameplay and graphics. So I got three stars on every level and then did about half the challenges before getting annoyed there weren't any more achievements to be had. They should've left a few achievements for the challenge modes.
The challenge modes are just doing each level with fewer than the three heroes they give you after the first levels. The heroes are key because you can upgrade them and give them special attacks. The monkey character can also morph into any of the bosses once you beat them as a super attack.
There are a lot of different tower types you can experiment with. If only there was more content or more achievements to go after, I would still be playing it. If you remember Crystal Defenders (a Final Fantasy themed tower defense - strictly so, no heroes) it was a game that got really difficult. Monkey King Saga could get a little of that and be a better game.
T-Rex Games developed it. They are based in Shanghai, China. I'll be looking out for their next game.
