Randomly Rolled: WRC 6

I remember playing Dungeons & Dragons way back when. My favorite part was creating tables of random encounters. You'd list a dozen beasties and their frequency of appearing and then roll some dice at specific intervals to see what might appear. I loved that. So I thought I'd apply randomization to my backlog and any games I've missed that I should experience.

Last week I came up with World Rally Championship 7 on PS4. I couldn't get a copy of that game and PS4s are still a bit expensive (probably because PS5 is still so hard to get), so I expanded it to the whole series and realized I already had WRC 6 digitally on Xbox because of Games with Gold. So I went with that (next week I have a better plan that should guarantee a better selection).

World Rally Championship 6 (or WRC 6) is a rally racing game based closely on the real 2016 rally championships. It's along the lines of a sim racer, like Forza, and not an arcade racer like Forza Horizon. For this reason, I didn't enjoy it much. You can't really crash or bust up obstacles alongside the road if you stray a bit. It's like you are funneled down a shoot with walls on all sides painted with nice scenery. If you roll your car, the game puts you immediately back on your wheels. I kind of like the crashes. It's why I love Forza Horizon so much. You can crash through environments or stick to the streets, it's your choice. Here you are stuck to the dirt roads and have to keep on track or suffer time penalties.

On the bright side, this game looks really good and sounds great.

The developer is Kylotonn based in France. They've done WRC 5-10 now among others. I noticed they did The Cursed Crusade which was if I remember right, a budget title medieval times fighting game I tried once, and Flatout 4, a game series I really like. I was surprised Flatout 4 wasn't done by Bugbear, the developer of the first bunch of games in the series.

Only 'realistic' racing game I like is Ridge Racer.

I had one of the fairly recent Ridge Racer games but I think I don't have it anymore. I still have to play a Ridge Racer game. At least, I don't remember playing one, but I may have years ago.

You know what's weird is I don't think any of the current gen systems have a new Ridge Racer game.  There's none on the PS4 or PS5, as well as the Switch and Xbox One or X/S.  Namco needs to get on that.  Usually each new console has one.  I don't think I've played a new Ridge Racer game since Ridge Racer 7 on PS3!

It was Ridge Racer Unbounded from 2012. It was developed by Flatout devs Bugbear which made in interested. It's apparently a bit like Burnout, which interests me a lot.

That was the last one on console. Two mobile games were made after that I never heard of before, the last one in 2016. Yeah, a new one should be made.
