Machine Memories: Apple Macintosh Plus

I graduated high school in 1986 and was off to college that fall. My parents were generous enough to send me off with a new computer, an Apple Macintosh Plus.

I used it exhaustively as a word processor. I was an English major and had a lot of papers to do. I was also a voluminous letter writer and would cram an envelop with dot matrix printer paper from the Mac's printer. I would write up stories and journals too, and I still have a few piles of these papers.

But, eventually, I came across games for it. A roommate of mine and I spent some time hacking Wizardry to get all the best weapons. Then I played Shadowgate, a graphic adventure game, quite a bit. Finally (my favorite on the system) Dark Castle and Beyond Dark Castle. Dark Castle was a 2D action platform game. You'd navigate a static screen and throw objects at enemies. Sometimes there would be a puzzle to solve. The sequel added scrolling enviroments and a helicopter backpack.

One of the best features of the Mac Plus aside from it being easily portable, was it's sound card. The sound effects from Dark Castle and Shadowgate were very realistic, and I can still hear them in my head today.

TV Time! Apple Mac Plus Commercial.

After our Apple II+, I didn't touch another Apple Mac computer until I was in college.  The Magazine Journalism computer labs used Macs instead of IBM PCs because they were better at print publishing somehow.  Took a bit of getting used to.

Remember those multicolored, round Macs they sold in computer stores everywhere in the mid to late 90s?

The iMac G3 maybe? Once I had sold my Mac Plus around '91 or so, I became a PC guy and haven't paid any attention to Apple since except for the iPod.
