The PlayStation was my first non-Nintendo console (well aside from the Atari 5200). The N64 was great and all, but it didn't have enough games on it and I was reviewing games for the newspaper at the time. So even though I couldn't really afford it, I bought a PlayStation and that was one of the best gaming purchases I ever made. After that I was reviewing games left and right. The PlayStation is my 2nd favorite game console. I do have that smaller PSOne model, too. It's no bigger than a Scholtzky's sandwich!

Playstation came out in ‘95. I probably got one in ‘96 or thereabouts.
At first this was the FPS ports machine for my friend and I. Games like Doom, Duke Nukem and Quake II we had already played on PC, but it was just easier to hook up a console and play them. Also, the console ports sometimes had new content like Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown and Final Doom. My friend and I played a ton of those games in multiplayer split/screen mode.
Another game we played a lot was Road Rash. It combined brawling and racing. It was a fun combination that we couldn’t stop playing. At one point we started recording play-by-play during the races. One of us would play and the other describe the action like it was a sport, then we’d switch. We tried to get into the next two Road Rash sequels Road Rash 3D and Jailbreak, but they didn’t control as well and used a different perspective view we didn't like.
We both got into destruction racing games after Road Rash. Destruction Derby seemed the best option but its sequel is where we really got into it. Destruction Derby 2 was not just in an arena but long races where you both wanted to win and wreck all the other cars. You had a damage diagram of your car so you could manage it and not get wrecked. This game was so fun we recorded play-by-play for this game too.
A game we both played co-op a lot was Wargames: Defcon 1. It was a tactical vehicle shooting game. I distinctly remember making myself a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream soda while we strove to complete the last few missions in the game during a marathon session. Fun!
We tried to get into the Duke Nukem sequels but because of the popularity of Tomb Raider, these games were switched to a third-person point-of-view. We played Duke Nukem Time to Kill to completion but weren’t all that thrilled with it, and didn’t bother playing the next one, Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes. It would be a very long time until the next Duke Nukem game came out.
A very late game for the PS that we got into in a big way was Hogs of War from 2001. It was like a 3D version of Worms in gameplay. You played as hogs in WWI with hilarious voice work by Rik Mayall of Drop Dead Fred fame and numerous British TV comedies (all of which I was a fan of). You could play with multiple players controlling the different hogs in your squad. There were both campaign and multiplayer modes. I still play this game but since it has gotten rarish and worth some money, we have sold several copies but not all of them.
Two PS games I got into much later and loved were Silent Hill (‘99) and XCOM UFO Defense (‘95).
My favoite version of the console is the PS One from 2000. It’s a smaller model and cute as a button. I don’t have one anymore though, so today I use my PS2 or PS3 for PS games.
TV Time! Funny Playstation ad from '95.
