Machine Memories: N64

We were on a run with console gaming by 1996: NES, Genesis, PS and now N64. I'm sure I didn't get one new, so probably got it a few years after its release. My friend and I got really into it though.

N64

I was obsessed with finding co-op games to play. Battle Tanx was a fun vehicle shooter but Battle Tanx Global Assault had multiplayer on all the campaign levels. “Campaign co-op" was the phrase I was looking for in any game at the time.

Hexen, the sequel to Heretic, was another game with co-op. Take a dark fantasy setting and build Doom-like game-play, what a match made in heaven. This is still my favorite N64 game today.

On the FPS front we played the ports (or new versions) of games we’d already played like Doom 64, Quake 64, Quake II and Duke Nukem 64. Duke Nukem 64 was a game we played a lot in multiplayer split/screen. I can still remember us racing each other to get the shotgun with the explosive shells because that weapon made you neigh invincible. It was so fun blasting each other to chunks while flying around with the jet pack.

A new FPS we got into was Turok. There were three main games and one multiplayer game with Turok Rage Wars. I still remember using the awesomely destructive and hilarious Cerebral Bore weapon in Rage Wars. Shoot it and watch the bolt drill itself into your buddy’s skull. Gross and amusing.

Destruction Derby 64 continued the vehicular mayhem. Head-on collisions were my favorite memory of this game.

Clay Fighter Sculptor’s Cut was a funny claymation fighter that I stumbled upon at Blockbuster. We both enjoyed it so much we eventually had several copies of the game. Who knew that 15 to 20 years later this would be the rarest N64 game. Too bad too, because we couldn’t resist selling our copies. Now I want to play it again. I guess I’ll have to settle for Clayfighter 63 1/3 without the extra characters. At least there will still be Sumo Santa who says, “Flabalanche!” and “My elves hit harder than you”. I love that.

I remember playing Diddy Kong Racing in front of my girlfriend. I usually only play Nintendo games with her around. This was my ideal sort of racing game that also had exploration and a great soundtrack.

I had to play Pokemon Snap for its photography angle. I love collecting things in games too. Perfect match.

Finally Star Wars Rogue Squadron was the best air fighting game I had played, and is probably still my favorite air fighter. How many times have I had to wrap a tow cable around an AT-AT's legs in games? Actually, a lot.

TV Time! Video shown to stockholders really shows off what the system looks like and its graphical capabilities.

I bought one of these at a game specialty store, not long before PS2 came out if I remember correctly. I always wanted to play Perfect Dark and Ocarina of Time. Also enjoyed the WCW wrestling games.  Doom 64 might be my favorite Doom, but I didn't play it until a couple generations later on PC using a source port

I played Doom 64 back then, but I had forgotten that it wasn't a port but an original game in the series when it came to Xbox recently.

Even though the N64 is what caused me to buy a PlayStation, I still really liked the N64.  Some of my favorites include Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, the Zelda games, the Banjo-Kazooie games, Kirby 64, Tetrisphere, and many more!

Yeah, I really like the system and I still have one. I like its design. The look of the games is great too.

I was disappointed in the lack of RPGs, top tier fighting games, and Metroid for the N64, but Super Mario 64 and the Zeldas were amazing, and the N64 far outclassed the PS1 in first-person shooters.  In addition to Goldeneye, I was a fan of Doom 64 and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, both of which I have on Switch.

I tried to replay Turok a little while ago. I couldn't stand the bland, featureless environments at the time and stopped. I should try it again.

Awww yeah, now there's nostalgia! Also, that video looks like there's an early build of Star Fox 64 in it, which is neat.

"Do a barrel roll!" I still say that even though I never made it through the whole game.
