It's 2014. What to Play?

A dozen games as if I played one a month that year. What would I play now? I thought I'd share the list and make a few comments.

January: Banner Saga - This tactical game was developed by Stoic, a company created by ex-Bioware employees. What a great art style it has reminiscent of Don Bluth! That was my first draw and then the tactical gameplay. They did three games and they're all great. You can get the trilogy on current systems. I'd play them again in a heartbeat.

February: Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy (3DS) - Another brilliant Level-5 puzzle game with amazing visuals and music. It's also perfect on a handheld like the 3DS. I played it back then and would again. I just have to find a copy.

March: Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z (X360, PS3) - Most people say this game is terrible, but I loved the humor in it so much, I still quote from it during gaming sessions. It's a third-person hack-n-slash game and a lot of fun until near the end where you have some rediculously long and finger breaking combos to pull off to win. Needless to say I never finished it, not wanting to break a didget. I'd play it again, if I can find a copy, just to refresh my head full of silly video game quotes.

April: Amazing Spider-Man 2 (X360, XBO, PS3) - Seems like Beenox took over the Spider-Man games after the excellent Treyarch ones. This got middling reviews, but I'd like to try it anyway. Carnage seems to be in the game, which is neat.

May: Wolfenstein: New Order: This was a Xbox One system seller for me but not until I had played it on my Xbox 360 first. I played it again on my new Xbox One a year latter. Machine Games knocked it out of the park with this incredible FPS. The game looks and sounds amazing the gunplay is perfect and as challenging as you want. The story is excellent too. I'm often thinking of the graphic style of the game, the posters you find all over, and the silly German language pop songs you can collect. Its story is as if the Nazi's won the war and were ruling during the 60s. It's available on new systems today.

June: Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark (called just Transformers: Dark Spark in the Xbox store): After what I think were good Transformers games by High Moon Studios, Edge of Reality did this Transformers game I'd like to try. It's still available on Xbox at least. I'm intrigued by the 3DS version made by Wayforward and is a strategy RPG. I think I may be more interested in that version if I can find a copy.

July: Sniper Elite 3: I tried a Sniper Elite game for a Game Pass quest a while back and found it pretty interesting. A whole game just sniping away. Why not? Developer Rebellion Developments has come up in my gaming from time to time as they have made a wide variety of games like NeverDead I was just looking at. I found the Sniper games less heavily about stealth even though that's part of it. The emphasis seems to be on the shooting, which is more my style.

August: Sacred 3: I played this back then. It got criticized by fans of the series as leaning more into the hack-n-slash genre than a more story driven RPG, but I liked it that way. It also has some super rediculous bosses like Shatterjack and hilarious voice work. I'm still using dialog from the game in my weekly gaming banter.

September: Forza Horizon 2 (XBO, X360): I just read some reddit posts that claimed this was one of the worst looking Xbox 360 games. Really? I don't remember it that way at all. I probably discovered this series around this time and was thrilled to finally have a more arcade style racer to play after the demise of Burnout. I quickly played this and the first FH game and have been following the series ever since.

October: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel: Coming after Borderlands 2 and developed by 2K Australia, I've come across many who criticize this, almost denegrating it to not a true Borderlands game. I did not think that and loved every minute of it. I think it has some of the best humor of the series.

November: Persona Q (3DS): Man, I used to have this. Maybe even I played a little bit of it, but now I want it back. It was supposed to combine elements of both Persona and Etrian Odyssey, a match made in heaven in my mind. Reaquiring it is going to be annoying and pricey I think.

December: NES Remix Pack (Wii-U, 3DS as Ultimate NES Remix): I'm glad to have gone through the 2014 list of games and find this, which I sort of watched from afar at the time. It seems a really neat idea of creating faux NES games to play in a kind of mini game collection. I'm currently looking for this in my local stores, but I'll probably have to get it online eventually.

And that's 2014 again. Anything comes to mind for you that year in gaming?

I liked NES Remix.  I wish they'd revisit that again.  Maybe SNES Remix?  Other games I really liked in 2014 were Child of Light, Kirby Triple Deluxe, Shovel Knight, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.

Darn, I forgot to look for NES Remix today at Game Junkies. I played Child of Light and liked it back then. I love the character designs in Shovel Knight. I have the amiibo. I should try that game again.
