Here are some other Gen 2 era games I played last week.
Rare Replay: I limited myself to games before '84 (and remakes of those). There are only 3 that qualify. Jetpac and Jetpac Refueled were my favorites. Both are simple but challenging. In the original you have to put your rocketship back together and fuel it before you can take off to the next level. All sorts of aliens are floating pass, deadly to encounter. There are a few platforms and you have a gun and jetpac to defend yourself and gather the parts. Take a look:
Refueled isn't bad either.
SNK 40th Anniversary Collection: Only 5 games here before '84 and I liked Fantasy best. It combines several different gameplay styles within one game. Check it out:
The side scrolling section where you have to dodge enemies with your balloon is difficult but you just have to memorize the patterns.
Midway Arcade Origins: Favorites this time in the released-before-1984 category were: Robotron 2084, Satan's Hollow, and Sinistar. All are difficult in different ways thanks to coin op design keeping play time to under 2 minutes per quarter. I always play Score Attack mode for getting on leaderboards and achievements. There are other modes which make the games easier in this collection.
Miscellaneous: These are single games I played that you can download on Xbox that came out before 1984.
Gyruss, Time Pilot, Space Invaders Infinity Gene, Galaga, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man. I really enjoyed all of these.
There are more I'd like to play from this period '77-'83 but they are not on Xbox, like Lunar Rescue, Intellivision games, Activision games I don't have and probably others I'm forgetting about right now. I may hook up the systems I need for those in the coming weeks.

If I had an Xbox One, Rare Replay would be one of the few games I would get for it.
I first played JetPac on Donkey Kong 64. It was a secret game in there. JetPac Refueled was one of the first Xbox LIVE games I played.
I couldn't get past the part in Fantasy where you have to land the hot air balloon on the pirate ship. The cannons always got me.
When I was a kid I was scared of SiniStar. I would purposely walk as far away from the cabinet as possible when I was in an arcade.
Gyruss and Time Pilot are freaking awesome. The guy who made those games would later work at Capcom and help make games like Mega Man and Street Fighter.

Rare Replay was a major reason why I got a Xbox One. I wish more developers would do a collection like that.
That was like the first area in Fantasy! Haha. I somehow got past that part. That game is too hard. I love games with multiple game styles in them.
SiniStar hungers, so yeah, I'd stay away. I just wish I could pick up those sinibombs more easily. Something about the controls makes it difficult.
Gyruss and Time Pilot are rising to the top of my favorite arcade games of the 80s. I didn't know that about the guy who developed them. Cool!
