'Tis a Week

This week I played mostly Mass Effect 2 but also Flock. I bought EDF World Brothers on Switch with some Fetch rewards and I saw the Borderlans movie.

Bought

Earth Defence Force: World Brothers - This is a pixelated varient to the usually realistic looking EDF series. I always associate cartoony looking games with Nintendo, so I thought it would be perfect on Switch. I also had $10 from scanning reciepts on Fetch, and the game was on sale for $14. That's a $4 purchase. Win win.

Played

Mass Effect 2 (remaster within Legendary collection) - I finished the main story and continued on to mop up the last of the side missions. I have one left to finish for next week. I ended the main game with a mostly empty Normandy. I lost everyone except for Joker and the doctor. I think if you tackle the final mission sooner, you save more crew members. The doctor hinted at that when I saved her. I also lost half my squad in the final battle. I don't think that's avoidable but your choices determine who dies. I loved playing this game.

After the last side mission I'll look at achievements and see what I want to do, but I will probably pause for a while to try out Skyward Sword on Switch, which I just rented from my library. For some weird reason, only the Wii version shows up in our catalog and I didn't know until a coworker told me that we have it. I'm going to have to tell someone in multimedia to get that fixed.

Flock - This is my small-file-Game-Pass-game-for-rewards play. It's an indie game where you are some sort of alien who rides an alien bird. Your first task is to start identifying all the indigenous life forms you find and talking to villagers who live in trees. I'm liking it so far.

Saw

Borderlands - I saw this already and it's not great, but not as bad as everyone is ranting about. I think it looks great. I loved seeing the characters and locations from the game rendered realistically. The story is not terrible, just kind of predictable and not especially close to the Borderland spirit of the games. It's not all that irreverent or rude like the games are, which is a shame. The worst sin of it is that it isn't very funny. Only a couple of Claptrap moments made me laugh. Overall it didn't move me much in any way. I think they took too much time with explaining the world and not enough of character development. Show don't tell is my advice for this film. I liked Lilith as the center of the film, but I missed Marcus' narration. So I think it was worth it to see, being a fan of the games, but I'll probably forget about it pretty quickly.

How was your week?

I wonder if my brothers have seen the Borderlands movie.  I think they liked the games pretty well.

The makers of Borderlands live REAL close to where I live.  Like, I could literally walk to their offices right now.

The only things I know about Borderlands is from Poker Night 2.  One of the characters you can play as is that square little robot.  GlaDOS from Portal is the dealer, so when she first came on, the square robot said, "Hubba hubba!"  GlaDOS called that little square robot a juice box, so that's what I call him from now on.  Juice Box Robot.  Sometimes at convensions they'd had that Juice Box Robot at GearBox's booth.  Also one of the stages in Poker Night 2 is set in a bar run by a scary clown mime type lady, and I think that's from Borderlands, too.  And that's all I know!

That's neat you live so close to their offices. They're getting a lot of heck over the movie. Fans really don't like it. I thought it was okay, very average.

I played that Poker Night 2. It was neat to see GlaDOS and Claptrap in it.

The problem with today's movies is that they're so afraid of offending anyone, they forgot how to be funny.

The Deadpool movie was pretty funny. The crowd thought so too. But you're right. I see very few comedies these days. It's a shame because it's my favorite type of film.
