The Week in Plays

I played a lot of games on my 2013-2015 list this Labor Day. I also picked up some games from Just Press Play this week.

Finished and Playing Now

I finished Bioshock Infinite and all the DLC on the complete edition on Xbox Series S. It was the second time for me with the main story but the first time I finished the Burial at Sea episode 1-2. The DLC is essential in linking up the story of Infinite with the first Bioshock and bringing it all together. It feels like maybe playing Infinite first and then Bioshock would be a more interesting sequence. I'm so happy I've finally finished every story element in Infinite.

Currently burried in Pikmin 3 on Wii-U. I went through a lot of games on XSS, PS4 and Wii-U this week before finding one that I can really stick to. The Wii-U pad interaction is interesting. It feels a little clumsy at first but I'm getting used to it. I'm a little worried that more active moments like battling a beastie or two will make this control system annoying, but I'll see. I love all the things you do in this game, the graphics and even story - which is a little thin. I almost got the Switch version today but Switch prices do not come down much. It ain't cheap, in other words.

Lined up for my next Game Pass game is Dragon Age Inquisition. I'm pretty sure I played this one in the series not too long ago and really liked it, maybe more than Origins. So I'm excited to tackle it again for GP rewards points on a regualar basis until I get tired of it.

Buys, Buys, Buys

I tried to keep it under control but Just Press Play is a great little store with a ton of great games. They even have a lot of indie game collector's editions that I poured over but didn't buy like Carrion and Monster Sanctuary. I'm not that out of control. Here's the list of what I bought plus one I found at a Goodwill.

Prof. Layton Curious Village (DS, CIB) - I got this for $16 because I'm pretty sure I only have a loose cart of the game. I'm going to record which games I have CIB now to avoid double buys. Mostly DS and 3DS stuff though because I have very few loose console games.

Space Invaders Extreme 2 (DS, CIB, $20) - I've put this on my list recentlk because of good reviews and my love of Space Invaders Infinitey Gene. You can get it digitally on Switch in a collection but having it for DS is great and I can't wait to try it out.

Skylanders Swap Force (Wii-U, $3) - I have Superchargers for Wii-U because of the Donkey Kong character I have that's only playable on the Wii-U version. Why not have Swap Force too since it's on my list this month. This way I don't have to switch systems to play it on Xbox 360. I have the special portal that works only with PS4/Wii-U Skylanders games. So I'm set when I get to it.

Titanfall (X360, $3) - For whatever reason this game is no longer on the Xbox store for Series X/S even though I'm sure I bought the digital version. Now it might be downloadable on my Xbox 360 but I don't want to hook that up just to find out, so I got a physical copy just in case. For $3 it's worth it. It's a great game. Titanfall 2, however, is still downloadable on Xbox Series X/S.

Horizon Forbidden West (PS4, $24) - I had trouble finding this over the summer, and maybe it's a better buy for PS5 because it has two discs for PS4, but I desperately wanted this in my collection. I love this series. It's essential for my PS4 collection.

A quick list of what I played but didn't stick with this week:

PS4 - Last of Us Remastered, Bloodborne
XSS - Rayman Legends, Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Ni No Kuni
3DS - Fire Emblem Awakening
Wii-U - Bayonetta 2, Zelda Wind Waker HD

If I had more time, I'd like to talk about these games because I didn't leave them because they were bad. I enjoyed ever minute or hour I played of them and will certain return to them another time.

Finally, tomorrow I will be at RetroCon at the Philadelphia Convention Center in Oaks, PA. I'll check out retro gaming and meet a few celebrities from TV and Film of yesteryear with my friend and gaming buddy, Mark.

What ya been playin'?

Aside from Hey! Pikmin, I never could get into that series.  And same thing with Prof. Layton.  I felt like I was having to solve a bunch of math story problems and I never liked doing that in high school.  I did like the Space Invaders Extreme games, though!

Have fun at RetroCon!  I have a TON of games to review now.  You can tell it's starting to get near the holiday season.  I guess that's one good thing about me getting COVID is that I have a few extra days around the house that I can play and review these games!

I get frustrated with puzzle games but in Prof Layton you always know you can buy hints to get through them. I hate getting permanently stuck in a game. The Pikmin 3 contols on the Wii-U made me stop playing it but I realized later you can change them. I love throwing Pikmin around.

RetroCon was okay. I met Townsend Coleman and heard him do The Tick voice.

That's cool.  A long time ago at an anime convention I met Don Messick.  He did the voice of countless Hanna Barbera characters like Scooby Doo, Astro, Papa Smurf, Boo-Boo, and so many more!  When I asked if he could do Muttley's laugh, he said he could do it better when he used to smoke!  I'm glad I got to meet him before he passed away.

Oh Muttley's laugh is a good one. I tried to do that one myself.

I have not played any DLC for the BioShock series (or the second game, for that matter) but my wife bought the PS4 collection a couple years ago and I think that includes everything. I really ought to do a complete series playthrough.

Man, I had Pikmin 3 on Wii U but I tried to play it at a very busy time of life and didn't get too far. Then when I went back to it a few years later, something had happened to the disc and it would not function properly. It was so frustrating because the disc looked fine. I'd like to get the Switch version (and Pikmin 4 as well) but time and money, ya know? Time and money.

I hope you are able to get back to Rayman Legends at some point. I played that last year and it was so great. Just a wonderful zone-out-and-platform game.

The Burial at Sea really links up Infinite with the first game and makes it all feel connnected. I need to replay Bioshock 2, or finish it, I can't remember if I ever finished it.

I'd like to get the Switch version of Pikmin 3 too. I had trouble with using the Wii-U pad for controling Pikmin. I found out later on reddit that you can change the control scheme, so I may go back to it.

I did play some Rayman Legends. What a great platformer! Very fun.
