The Week's 70s Plays

i played a bunch of stuff from my month's theme (70s). When I run out of stuff on a particular day, I default to Lego Star Wars.
Gin Rummy (XSS): This is an old Xbox 360 Live Arcade title that's still available on Xbox Series. I had no idea how to play this card game since I've never played it with real cards, but it is easy to learn; although, I still don't fully understand the scoring. I played the four variations of the game vs the computer and then I got my friend Mark to buy it ($5) and we played against each other online (there are no random online players for this). I was surprised how much time this ate up. We played most of a whole day. Funny how a simple game like this can absorb you as much as an emersive RPG sometimes. But I'm kind of done with it for now.
Space Invaders (GBC): I broke out the Game Cube and its Game Boy Player for this since my GBA SP was too dim for my eyes. It's really cool. I don't much go for the original Space Invaders but add powerups and boss fights and I'm all in. I think this is the same game that's on SNES and PS1. I'll find out soon since I have the SNES version.
Super Breakout (GBC): Just straight up Super Breakout for your Game Boy Color. It's playable just fine with the GameCube controller.
Arkanoid DS:
I broke out my DSi XL for this and, wow, I really liked it. I beat the main game in one session and dug into the Quest mode challenges. You earn points that you can spend to unlock customizations. I changed my Vous (paddle) to slime and the blocks to Space Invaders. The music is pretty great, running the gamut of styles until featuring aggressive guitar rock for the final levels (see vid above). I just love the DSi XL. The bigger screen is great and as bright as I want it. I just love this system.
Block Block (XSS): An Arkanoid clone. I ran through all the challenge modes on the Capcom Collection for Xbox Series S. You gain Caspo points for doing this, which is just for the leaderboards, but it's fun to do. I'm kind of done with this for now though.
Break 'Em All (DSi XL): This is Arkanoid but with less features and fun factor. It was okay for a short while.
Space Invaders Extreme 2 (DS): Now this is what I am after with Space Invaders, great remixes of the original (and to me kind of boring) formula. Stuff is just exploding all over the screens in this game. Lots of powerups, action across both screens at once and big old boss fights. I love it and am still playing it until it tires me out. Love it!
Mattel Electronics Baseball: Mattel's 1970s LED handheld I played as a kid. It's still fun for a short blast from the past. There are two modes, one simpler and the other with faster pitches, curve balls and more varied batter run speeds. Better not take that full double if your player's run speed is slow. It is surprisingly complex for a bunch of LED lights with a baseball field overlay.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (XSS): When all the brick breaking and space shooting is over for a day, I return to this and hunt down Kyber bricks and side missions. There are so many cool locations, ships, and characters to play around with, I'll be plugging away at this for a good long while yet.
That's a week. I've picked up more 70s related retro stuff for next week.
