Finally Found That One

I ripped through my Switch rentals this week and saved what I thought I'd like best for last and, sure enough, I'm still playing it. I've even played it on multiple systems now. Here's everything though.

Sonic X Shadow Generations - I was hoping for a open world style Sonic game like Sonic Adventure but no, it's the 2D style, super fast, super frustrating for me. Don't get me wrong, I love the speed in this game -- it's a genius design --, but how the heck do you see what's coming? Just another trial-and-error game where you have to memorize patterns. It's my bugaboo.

Mario Vs. Donkey Kong - It's a neat idea to have Mario do levels in the style of Donkey Kong. I just didn't take to it.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown - I was really bored by the story and characters in this game -- seems so overly familiar and predictable. I liked the actiony gameplay. I don't know, I found something about the fighting a bit frustrating to me, maybe too tactical, I don't know. It just didn't grab me.

Nintendo World Championships NES Edition - I really liked this. You play short segments of classic NES games for time. I ran through every game as far as I could before I ran out of points for more levels. Then I played a few rounds of the online challenges which were just the same levels where you try and beat real players, but I was hoping for new levels. It was cool to play just the boss fight of games I've never gotten to the boss in like. . . well, all of them:

Balloon Fight
Donkey Kong
Excitebike - I think I get the controls for this finally.
Ice Climber - I can't remember last time I played this one.
Kid Icarus - First time I've played this, I think.
Kirby's Adventure - So oral.
Metroid
Super Mario Bros 1-3
Super Mario Bros Lost Levels
Legend of Zelda - I like how it highlights the secret areas for you. Can I have this in the main game?
Zelda II

Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed

And now comes the game I have finally attached myself to for the long haul for the love of Epic Mickey. I have never beat any of the Epic Mickey games because some gameplay mechanic always got in my way. This remake of the first game fixes everything. I'm just so immersed in it right now. I love the mix of 3D world platforming, exploration, collecting, puzzle solving, fighting and the 2D levels that connect them. Yeah, I complain sometimes about those, but not for long because they are short. I love the story, the Disney characters and the old film style of the 2D sections. I'm maybe 2/3rds the way through the game now? I've met Oswald and am approaching the likely Captain Hook boss fight.

I'm renting this game on Switch, but after a hour or so, I wanted to own a physical copy for any system I could get a good price. It's still at least $45 across systems, so I looked for digital and put it on my wish list for Switch, PS4 ($30 right now), and Xbox. Although, I had a problem with Xbox. The game did not come up in searches on the the console, only the DLC -- same with the Xbox App. I eventually went to Xbox.com and found it, hit the wish list button, and then saw it on my wish list on console. What the heck?! That was just weird. Anyway, I'm desperate to earn trophies or achievements in this game, because I will certainly complete every last bit of it if I can.

Also, I downloaded the demo on PS4 and played through that too just to play some of it on another system. Then I went back to Switch and my full game rental. The only issue I have with the Switch is that the joycons are small and the buttons close together. I sometimes hit A when I mean B. But it doesn't happen that often. It's fine.

Oh joy, a platform game I can settle in with, finally.

I was wondering about the Epic Mickey game. And I have the same issues wth the joycon controllers, so I bought a Switch Pro controller a couple of years ago. I am very glad I did, it was well worth the price.

I have a pro controller, but I've been just using that holder for the joycons. Why? I don't know. I should plug that thing in again.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is actualy a remake of Sonic Generations with new content.  I reviewed the original back in the day and thought it was pretty good.  I liked how they gave 2D chubby Sonic classic levels based on the new ones.

I liked Mario vs. Donkey Kong.  It's actually a sequel to the Donkey Kong Game Boy game.  Even though I liked the Game Boy one way better, the sequel wasn't bad.  Switch remake adds some nice new features, too.

I enjoyed Nintendo World Championships NES Edition, but not as long as I thought I would.  It's basically NES Remix for speedrunners.

I liked Epic Mickey, but not enough to buy the remake.  One of the feathers in my game reviewing cap was being on a roundtable discussion with Warren Specter, the guy who helped create Epic Mickey.

We clearly have much different tastes in platform games. I tried to play Epic Mickey on the Wii and just could not get into it. Yeah, the camera was an issue at times but more than that I just did not gel with the mission-based hub world. I felt frustrated and bored, which is not a good combo. Meanwhile, The Lost Crown was my personal game of the year last year lol. But hey, I am glad for you that you are enjoying Epic Mickey so much. I'm glad the game industry has the breadth and depth to cater to so many different tastes and preferences today.
