Remembering Dreamcast

November is coming up, and so I'm looking forward to revisiting games from the first decade of the 2000s. However, I will not be doing Dreamcast because I don't have one anymore and have only a passing interest in getting another one. But, I had one back then, and it's fun to remember to good times I had on the system.

I got a Dreamcast just after it's demise maybe in 2004 when Gamestop was unloading them for very low prices. I got mine for $40 and then got all the periferals for cheap too. I eventually traded it for space reasons in my apartment, but I kind of wish I still had it. Here are some games, listed chronologically, I played with Mad Krammer (MK) back then and a few that might make me want another one.

Sega Bass Fishing - Classic. With the fishing controler (which, btw, goes for over $100 boxed these days) this game was so much fun. I think it's the best fishing periferal ever made. It's the biggest reason for me to get another Dreamcast. MK and I played the heck out of it. The funny music still rings through my head, and I sing "Feel the Heat" from time to time 'cause it sounds so funny to me.

I thought it was from a real pop song but it was made just for the game.

Toy Commander - I remember playing this and thinking it was pretty good. I just saw a similar game just out called House Fighters: Total Mess that has a ton of Toy Commander vibe.

NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC - This plays surprisingly like NBA Jam even though the title suggests more of simulation style game. MK and I had a blast with it.

MDK2 - This third-person shooter brings back memories, not because I played it on Dreamcast so much, but because I got it for free with my first big PC purchase from Dell Computers in 2000. The game was quite stunning visually for the time, but I didn't enjoy the controls that much.

Guantlet Legends - MK and I played this sword & sorcery action RPG co-op a lot on Dreamcast. We probably played it on N64 as well. I was always looking for co-op games for MK and I to play.

Wacky Races - It's a game I just put on my PS2 list and never knew it existed until now. I would've loved to have had it for Dreamcast. It's based on a 60s cartoon I liked a lot.

Seaman - MK and I still joke about this game to this day. What a strange life sim this was. With the microphone attachment on the Dreamcast controller you could talk to it and teach it to speak. You can imagine what words that half man, half frog creature would say under the influence of two crazy gamers.

Sega Marine Fishing - As good as the fresh water Bass Fishing and MK and I played the heck out of it. I should say, MK still has his Dreamcast and fishing controller, so I could play it again if I borrowed it. I do like to have my own stuff though. Sega Bass Fishing got ports to Wii and Xbox, so what's up with this?

Quake III Arena - Coming off Duke Nukem multplayer on N64, MK and I played a bunch of this. It might have been the last time we really played deathmatch multiplayer. After this it was all Halo co-op missions, PvE. I still remember how fast this game played and how accurate the shooting - a true e-sport.

Skies of Arcadia - I'll never get this again nowdays 'cause it is pricey now. I always wanted the upgraded version on GameCube, Skies of Arcadia Legends, but that also is pricey now. It was a great RPG MK and I played a lot. You had a mini-game you could play on your memory card. Yes the Dreamcast memory card inserted in the controller had a tiny screen on it. Cool touch. I saw a game with Skies of Arcadia vibes recently, Echoes of Elysium.

Grandia II - I never got to play this RPG (I played Grandia III on PS2), but it was also on PS2 and it now has a remastered version on modern consoles I put on my wish list. I need to get to it.

Typing of the Dead - Before I played TyperShark on PopCop or actually learned to type via Mavis Beacon, I played this House of the Dead variant on the Dreamcast keyboard. The Dreamcast was ahead of its time in a lot of ways.

Reel Fishing: Wild - After the Sega fishing games, I was determined to get all the fishing games on Dreamcast. This wasn't maybe as arcady fun as those but it was worthy enough to own. I believe this series is still alive today.

Dragonriders: Chronicles of Pern - Weird. I've never seen a video game version of Anne McCaffrey's Pern fantasy book series before this. I read them all and have been recollecting the books recently. This is an adventure game only on Dreamcast and PC. I suppose this might be one reason to have the console again.

Sega Bass Fishing 2 - You know, I don't remember much about this, only, that I had to have every fishing game for the console. It'd be a real pain to get them all again, but maybe one day I'll do it.

And that's about it. Yes, I could cite Power Stone, Space Channel 5, Dead or Alive 2, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi or Samba de Amigo like a lot of people reference (and which I have played some and wouldn't mind revisiting) but the above listed are more what I'm into on the system and what would get me interested in getting another Dreamcast.

Addendum: House of the Dead 2 on the Dreamcast release list makes me think of all the light gun games MK and I played around that time too.
