It's sort of roughly so because in gaming it means to me the seventh gen consoles which really started in 2005, but it's more strictly so for my TV/Film and reading. So this week I set up my PS3, juiced my DSi XL and got to work.

DSi XL

I love my DSi XL. From the first moment I started it up I felt good regardless what game I had in there. Those bigger screens compared to the GBA just make it so much better. I'm going chronologically through my collection and trading anything that doesn't grab me.

Space Invaders: Revolution - This contains the original game and an upgraded version. The upgraded version has all sorts of power-ups you can use and enemies which do different things like split into two at first hit. There's also a world map on which you can choose levels. Each has region appropriate music. The game is not wildly different from the original though, and I can't see how you progress in any way. I cleared a region and nothing changed. I will, however, keep this just to play a little Space Invaders from time to time.
Real Time Conflict: Shogun Empires - A RTS I got when I was crazy for those things. If it had a certain look and feel, I might like it. I like these complex games to be simplified in look and play for my handheld experience. This is not. Trade.
Break 'Em All - A brick-breaker game, litterally just a Breakout clone. I don't exactly like using the stylus to move my paddle but it does make movement quick and accurate. I have to keep this 'cause "brick breakin' makes me feel good" (sung to Ghostbusters theme), but I'm not hugely thrilled by it. It doesn't seem to add much to Breakout.

PS3

I have the fat 40GB PS3 from 2007. It doesn't have PS2 back compatability. I'm in the market for a slim or super slim because this thing is big and heavy. I recently got a new bag for it that's a little more padded. I'm fequently carrying these consoles back and forth from Mad Krammer's place.

The Golden Compass - I recently read the book and was curious about the game. It's pretty basic, but it was cool to see locations rendered from the book. However, I got stuck. The prompt for interacting with NPCs wouldn't come up and thus I couldn't progress.

You start by fighting with polar bear Iorek with Lyra on his back. Theres some platforming with Lyra next. She uses her animal daemons to perform different actions. Then you go back in time to Lyra at school where you challenge some bullies to a foot race on rooftops and spit cherry pits at teachers. I got stuck after that trying to talk to a NPC in order to get past a door. The game seemed pretty okay except for this weird problem. Trading it.
Time Crisis 4 - It turns out this isn't compatible with the PS Move, only the Guncon 3, which I'm looking for now. The game was included in Time Crisis Rizing Storm which does have PS Move controls. It is a little more expensive to get though. I played TC4 with the controller. It adds a FPS segment where you can freely move around but then goes back to the arcade style with fixed positioning. It's pretty fun, but I'll hunt down a Guncon to get the best experience out of it. Keeper.
Brunswick Pro Bowling - I had some trouble getting the PS Move to work in this game. The console seemed to see the device but in the game it wouldn't sync. I have to fiddle with it a bit. It seems like a good bowling game. It's made by Farsight Studios who've done the excellent Pinball Arcade, Pinball Hall of Fame and Stern Pinball collections. Keeper.

XSS

Hogwarts Legacy - It just keeps on engaging me. The world outside Hogwarts is huge and full of things to do from battles to puzzles to capturing creatures to gathering magic from haunted ruins. There are times when I forget about missions and collectibles and just explore in the purest way. There's been very few games that I've found myself just exploring without wanting an aim. It's a tesitiment to the beauty of the graphics, the complexity of the landscape and the many new things that pop up that aren't marked on the map.

TV on Youtube

I've discovered 2010s Robotomy. This is an animated show with Patton Oswalt's voice and produced in part by World Leaders Entertainment who did The Venture Bros.. It's very funny. It's about robots in high school set in a distopic, all-robot, future. It only went 10 episodes. I seem to like short run shows because they're usually quirky. I love the graphic style of it and the punk rock opening and closing music.

Books

I'm on to 2015s Solenoid by Mircea Cartarescu, a Romanian author. So far it seems highly autobiographical, about the author's years as a 7th grade English teacher in Budapest. It feels Kafkaesque in that the main character seems in distress most of the time and confronted by weird, almost magical, situations. I'm into it. Lots of new vocab to look up too.

Well then, perhaps a blog on the DS best of or PS3 best of tomorrow if things work out right.

Auf Wiedersehen! (I'm reading a German cookbook this month, another category I should add here next time, maybe).
