It's time to run down the list of GameCube games on Metacritic. It's fun and brings up memories and helps me decide what stays in my collection and what I need to pick up. Here goes.
1. 16. Metroid Prime 1 and 2 - Incredibly, I still have these games even though I can never get through them because I dislike the control scheme. I keep trying though.
2. 18. Resident Evil 4 and RE Remake - I could say the same about the control scheme for these games. I want to like these. Maybe I just need to see the controls as a way to up the tension as daftman suggests. I think next time I try these I'll take that approach and maybe I'll start to enjoy them.
3. 4. 5. 19. Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Collectors Edition, Ocarina of Time Master Quest - My favorite of these is Wind Waker. I traded my NGC copy a while back because I have the HD version on Wii-U, but now I regret that, as usual. I like the cell-shaded graphics especially. Maybe it seems more artistic to me. I seem to always have trouble with the more realistically rendered Zelda games.
6. 9. 12. 20. 23. 25. Madden NFL 2004, NFL 2K3, Madden NFL 2003, NCAA Football 2003, NBA 2K2, Madden NFL 2005 - Sports. I see even less reason for them on a GameCube, but I'm not a sports game fan for the most part anyway. I am going to try out Madden 2004 on Xbox later on, just to see if it surprises me.
7. 13. SoulCalibur II, Super Smash Bros Melee - I could say the same about fighting games, but you can play as Link in SoulCalibur 2, I believe. If I found it for a dollar at a Goodwill, I'd try it. SSBM is interesting and I got the one for Wii-U not too long ago to try out. It certainly looks and plays great. My library hosts SSB contests from time to time and I hear the cheering while I'm shelving. It sounds a blast played with others. I don't think I can get MK into it though.
8. Viewtiful Joe - This is my kind of fighting, stylish. My friend MK and I were way into the first two games in the series back in 2003. I don't have them anymore, sadly. Clover Studios make very interesting visuals, often injected with a lot of humor, two ingredients guaranteed to get my interest. This series can be hard though. Back then, though, we powered through it. I don't know how tolerant I'd be of it today.
10. Eternal Darkness - I used to have this before it was considered a rarity and priced accordingly. The game likes to mess with you relentlessly causing you to reset your system at times thinking something just broke. It's a unique horror game that deserves a remake.
11. 17. 21. SSX 3, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 and 3 - Boarding/BMX games have never been on my list to play, but I hear they are good. I find pulling tricks to be somewhat uninteresting. I'd rather race, explore and do quests. It's just my thing.
14. Super Mario Sunshine - Platformers aren't my favorite genre either but whenever I see this I get curious because there are a few platformers I like. Maybe this could be one of them?
15. Prince of Persia Sands of Time - I played this on Xbox back in 2003 more out of curiousity than any real interest. It's good for sure but not something I'd revisit.
22. Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II - I got a GameCube for this in 2001, but I wasn't too into it on a replay last week. I wonder why they didn't just call it Rogue Squadron II? I loved the first one on N64 and was almost confused by the Rogue Leader title. They did the same with the third game calling it Rebel Strike. What's up with that? I was a fan of Factor 5 too and followed them up through Lair on PS3. They kind of disappeared after that.
24. Pikmin 2 - In my early days, I was way into RTS gameplay thanks to WarCraft II. So I always looked for console games with that style. This was one of them that I took to right away because of that. I traded this second game a while back because I have the New Play Control version on Wii, but I regret it now. At least I still have the first game on NGC.
And that's the top 25 on Metacritic. I would say only five of them make my personal top ten list right now: Metroid Prime 1, 2, Zelda Wind Waker, Viewtiful Joe and Pikmin 2.
What do you think?
