'cause it feels so good. Stuff I played a lot in the 7th generation of consoles, 2005-2013ish.
2005
This is a transition year, and I was playing games on PS2, Xbox and GameCube still (a great year for those systems too), but this is just 7th gen stuff I played close to their release dates. I got a DS this year, but I didn't have a 360 until 2006 when I played those mentioned below. The number after the console is the Metacritic ranking for that year.
Advance Wars Dual Strike (DS, #2) - My first DS game.
Call of Duty 2 (X360, #3) - Used in many store displays to show off the 360's graphics.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (DS, #8) - My second DS game.
Kameo: Elements of Power (X360, #25) - This Rare game had some issues but I generally enjoyed it and hunted achievements in it too.
Outpost Kaloki X (Xbox Live Arcade, #32) - Early XBLA game by NinjaBee. I followed them into their next several games. This was a city builder in space.
Gun (X360, #40) - Where I failed to get into Rockstar's Red Dead series this gen, I dipped deep into this open world third-person shooter. MK and I played the heck out of it.
Quake 4 (X360, #48) - Not the best, but a servicable Quake game for your 360 by Raven Software. I had to play it and did to completion.
Bejeweled 2 Deluxe (Xbox Live Arcade, #57) - Always a mainstay on XBLA then was PopCap casual games, carrying over from my PC days which were just starting to end as I embraced consoles completely by 2009.
Hardwood Backgammon (Xbox Live Arcade, #76) - So long have MK and been playing this. He was literally playing this off and on this month in 2026 on his Xbox Series X. That's 21 years of Backgammon!
Played much later and enjoyed: Condemned Criminal Origins (X360, #18), Peter Jackson's King Kong (X360, #24)
Want to play now: Robottron 2084 (XBLA), Battles of Prince of Persia (DS), Kirby Canvas Curse (DS), Ridge Racer 6 (X360)
2006
This year, in the summer, I got a Xbox 360 from Dell computers where I had a credit line. I would go through three consoles before that red ring of death stopped happening this gen. I didn't get a PS3 until 2007, but I played those mentioned as soon as I got one.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (X360, #3) - My first 360 game. I have a vivid picture in my mind of where I set up my console, where I went in my first play and what I was doing (Alchemist in Skingrad's West Weald Inn).
Burnout Revenge (X360, #5) - The last great Burnout game imo. MK and I devoured it and went after every achievement.
Resistance: Fall of Man (PS3, #9) - Insomniac's great FPS series alongside their great Ratchet & Clank games. I didn't play the next 2 games in the Resistance series much though. I aim to remedy that this year.
Dead Rising (X360, #15) - MK and I were very into this the summer it came out. The time limits kind of drove me crazy though. Still, a zombie game where you can wreck house any way you wanted and construct weapons from found items? Oh yes, please.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (X360, #23) - The obligatory co-op, top-down view, RPG MK and I always played since Gauntlet back in '85.
Call of Duty 3 (X360, #27) - The Treyarch team on this one, and it's good.
Age of Empires: Age of Kings (DS, #38) - I rented this when I was doing Gamefly and was entranced. It what I always wanted from these normally PC only complex RTS games. That is, a simpler interface and loads of real history to ponder. I think I read a whole book of text in between battles on this DS game.
Cloning Clyde (XBLA, #41) - NinjaBee continues to please in this puzzle game where you have to use clones of yourself to solve puzzles.
Prey (X360, #47) - An FPS by Human Head that did Rune I played not too long ago and enjoyed. MK and I took Prey appart and played every bit of it. Cue "Don't Fear the Reaper" again to bring back the opening moments of this game.
Far Cry Insincts Predator (X360, #52) - All previous updates and iterations of the original Far Cry in one game for your console. Yes and more yes.
Brain Age: Train Your Brain (DS, #59) - The only game I ever got my non-gamer friend LJ to play. It turns out, this isn't all that challenging for your brain. Novel, though.
Just Cause (X360, #74) - MK and I dove deep into this, completing it in every way possible. I haven't really taken to any other game in the series though. What is it now, Just Cause 5?
The Outfit (X360, #94) - A game MK and I played co-op, a third-person WWII action game. Makes me think of Wargames for PS1. Very fun in co-op.
Enchanted Arms (X360, #102) - An FromSoftware RPG MK and I played in tandem to the end. A really enjoyable RPG, and one I'd like to pick up again if I can find it for a reasonable price. It's a little pricey right now.
Feeding Frenzy (XBLA, #126) - Another PopCap gem both MK and I played to heck and back. Like many PopCap games, its based on previous games. This one taken from Intellivision's Shark! Shark!.
Time Pilot (XBLA, #143) - So many 80s arcade games came to XBLA and I rediscovered this one. It's a great idea to move a pilot through time to fly different airplanes. It's an idea that should've been carried over into a modern game.
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom (PS3, #164) - Always on the look out for co-op games, this PS3 exclusive based on Gauntlet or Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, had me wanting a PS3 very badly. I'd wait until the price came down to $400 a year later to play this.
Played later and liked: Gears of War, Viva Pinata, Assault Heroes, Jetpac: Refueled, Open Season.
Want to play now: Yoshi's Island DS, Ridge Racer 7, Super Swing Golf.
I thought this journey would make for some short lists, but it didn't. Surprise, surprise. So only two years this time. I hope to go through all 7 or so years of this gen as I replay this stuff in the coming months.
