VG Print Ads: Namco & Blade

So I'm back again with more scans of video game ads from magazines or comics. These two are from Marvel Knights #8 (Feb. 2001) which I got because it featured Doctor Strange. That I got two video game ads was a pleasant bonus.

This first one is a two page ad for Namco games on the PS2. Tekken Tag Tournament, Ridge Racer V, and MotoGP were all PS2 launch games. This is kind of a strange ad that suggests we should worship our games, or at least prepare spiritually for playing them. That's how good they are. They inspire a deep devotion to the mastery of them. Nothing like ads to overstate their point to grab your attention.

Blade on the original PlayStation was a late release game, November of 2000, just after PS2 released in October. The ad sports a pretty simple design that shows you Blade and a vampire filling the background. Even if you didn't know about the movie, you could probably guess this game is about a vampire hunter. Then at the bottom we get some screen shots and an explanation of each of them.

All I have to say in conclusion is that video game ads are sweet. I just love 'em.

these are good but not nearly as cool as the ones in GI JOE comics I read when I was 8.  I'm actually tempted to go through my old comics and see if I can find some ads myself.  I have a lot of old Xmen from the 80's and maybe there's some cool stuff in there.

GI JOE eh? I'll have to keep my eye out for those in the 25 cent bin.

The best print ads I ever saw were:

A Sega ad for the the Saturn which had a luscious naked woman on them with the game screenshots pasted over her naughty areas. Ostensibly, the game system was so awesome that you didn't even notice her.

A Final Fantasy VII ad with the Junon canon that read "Someone get the guys who make cartridge games a cigarette and a blindfold." The small print on the ad read, "If this game were on a cartridge, it would cost $3,000."

Awesome! I hope I come across those so I can scan 'em.

I loved video game ads back in college. Whenever we had a print ad project in one of my Graphic Design classes, I would always do video game ads, mainly sports games. I always liked how they all somewhat followed a similar template. Thanks for the flashback

Yea, graphic design. I've been thinking about that as a career, so I've been trying to do a little analysis on the ads I find. Heck, maybe I'll learn something.
