Sid Meier's Ace Patrol & Massive Chalice

Sid Meier's Ace Patrol came out for iOS in early May and I just found out about it. It's a weird coincidence since I was thinking about the old board game Fight in the Skies, a WWI air battle game, recently and was trying to think of any video game that would be close to it. Well, this Firaxis game is it.

Ace Patrol

It's a free-to-play turn-based WWI flight game for your iPod or iPad. I just wish I had an iPad right now, because I would be all over this game. I was surprised to find the cheapest iPad, the iPad mini, at $399. That's console money. I guess it will be a while before I get to play this.

Another game that looks super interesting to me recently I found out about on the Double Fine Action Cast podcast. They are doing another kickstarter for a game called Massive Chalice that's being described along the lines of Final Fantasy Tactics.

Massive Chalice

The kickstarter has broken it's goal of 725K and about to top 1 Million. Man, a strategy RPG by Double Fine? That's all I need to know really. I'll be following this very closely.

They're so fun! I watched the video they posted on their kickstarter page (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doublefine/double-fines-massive-chalice) and thought of how great it would be to work with those people.

I clicked buy on the 2K Games page for Ace Patrol (http://www.2kgames.com/#/games/sid-meier-s-ace-patrol/?platform=ios) and it loaded up in iTunes right away. I can't put it on my iPod Touch though, it's now not compatible with anything new even though it's only 4 years old. I am not getting a new one though. I'd rather have an iPad to play these games on, and not the iPad mini. That's just too small for a $400 gaming device.

massive chalice does sound awesome.  The only problem is that I have not had much luck with games in the FFT vein recently.

Other games mentioned on their podcast that are going to influence Massive Chalice are X-Com: Enemy Unknown and Fire Emblem. They sound like they're going to make the game less crazy complex than FFT, or at least let the gamer choose how deep they want to make the experience. I appreciate that because FFT overwelmed me the first time I tried to play it.

I wish I had an iPad. Too dang expensive, man! Been playing some iOS games lately though, like Ron Gilbert's take on the match-3 puzzler, Scurvy Scallywags. It's really good Smile

My list of iOS games I want to play is growing to the point where I'm really thinking about how to afford $500 of portable gaming. It's really too high for me to even seriously consider right now though.

Have you heard of Touch Arcade? Their app lets you put any game into a Watch List and then you get a notification whenever anything happens to that game, like an update or price change, for instance. My Watch List is super long but every couple of weeks, sometimes more often, one of the games I put in there will drop to free, usually for just a day or two, but long enough for me to grab it. Most of the games I play on my iPhone normally cost money but I get almost all of them for free.

I was listening to their podcast for a while there. I may resubscribe, but I'm not sure there's enough time to get to it. I got so many podcasts going right now. They're piling up now on my iPod.

I've never actually listened to their podcast. I just find their app so handy lol

Double Fine is the bomb.  Actually, I've been wanting to play that Ace Patrol game, but the supposed "free" nature of it has turned me off.

You really have to be careful, because you could spend quite a lot. It's kind of annoying to know that when you're playing the free version that it's missing important parts.

I want to go back and play Double Fine's Stacking.

I've been playing Ace Patrol since it came out. I love flying games and this one is pretty unique. I try to avoid spending money on these sort of games but I just might for this one. I saw an interview with Sid Meier recently where he talked about it. I guess his company has shifted to doing games for mobile primarily now. He says it's the wave of the future.
