Exceptionally bored today. My gaming buddy got himself a girlfriend, my other friend was busy doing maintenance on his car, and my girlfriend was busy with chores, so I spent the day in Starbucks writing and thinking about games. After starting to freeze from the air conditioning after about three hours, I left to do some shopping. I had $20 left after buying the Season Pass to Bioshock Infinite, so I went to Best Buy and priced some of the games I mentioned in my previous blog about 2012 stuff I still needed to play. Not finiding anything for $20 or less, I went to Walmart and found Far Cry 3 at $20. (They had Assassin's Creed III for $20 too but I had to stay with my budget and leave it be for now).
My history with the Far Cry series is very spotty. I played the first Far Cry on original Xbox and then its port with sequel Far Cry:Instincts - Predator on Xbox 360. The first game was high on my list of games to play back in '05 due to the stunning trailers that showed off the gorgeous island location and copious FPS action. I finished neither Xbox or 360 versions of the game but enjoyed the first half of the game (recently I replayed FCIP and found it too stealth oriented for my taste).
Far Cry 2 seemed interesting with its African location but its emphasis on survival type gameplay - guns rusting, having to maintain medication to control your Malaria - really frustrated me. I played the demo but didn't find the game interesting enough to purchase.
Far Cry 3, in the early trailers, seemed to look back to that first game with its environment and gameplay. There seemed to be a good mix of gunplay and survival. I was hopeful. I didn't get it day-one but since then all I've heard has been good, so soon it rose in my estimation until it became a must-have game half a year later, and now I finally own it.
Side note. I always thought these games were developed by Crytek, makers of the Crysis series, but only the very first Far Cry on the PC was done by them. The rest are all Ubisoft Montreal.
