Far Cry 3 is Kicking Dan and Travis's Collective Ass

As a companion piece to Matt’s blog about getting trounced by Yargz, I figured I’d fess up about Dan and myself. We’ve been playing some Far Cry 3 co-op missions together, having a lot of fun, and getting our asses soundly kicked. Hopefully we can blame it all on the mode being intended for four players, but I’m not sure if it’s scaling it back for two of us or not.
So far, we’ve been playing on “normal” and eventually finding success. These missions are pretty tough, with lots of enemies charging out of the hills at you, and a few differences from the main campaign to make it extra dicey. For instance, I don’t remember a machete to your face meaning insta-death, but it sure seems to happen a lot in co-op. The healing doesn’t work quite the same, either, forcing you to get pretty beat up before you can inject yourself and recover significantly. The biggest and toughest difference, though, is the dogs.
The dogs are around in the main game, but I don’t remember having this much trouble with them. You can’t kill them here with the same QTE prompts, but can only use those to keep from dying for a while as you wait for your teammate to come over and shoot the dog for you. It’s actually kind of a neat idea for the co-op section, but since the dogs come out of nowhere pretty often, it ended many of our attempts pretty quickly. They also seem to have the dogs show up right before the moment you are going to trigger a checkpoint and ruin everything.
When I played Far Cry 3 for review, I only dabbled in the co-op sections, and always in match-making mode with three other players. I never dug into it this seriously. Even though it’s taking some adjustment to a few things, we are really having a lot of fun. I unknowingly stayed up about an hour and a half after I meant to the other night because I was so absorbed in finishing our mission. It’s pretty awesome to come back to this game that I really enjoyed and take on an entire segment with fresh eyes. I can’t wait to play more, as long as Dan agrees to bump it down to “casual” from here on out.
