Looking Forward to Next Gen

My feelings about graphics in games have just turned a corner into the next gen. It all started when I saw this gameplay video for Killzone: Shadowfall above. As the drop ship flew over the city, I noticed the sharpness of the graphics and the enormous draw distance. You can see all the way to the edge of the city! Then as you land, the water flowing off the skyscraper was impressive. My eyes opened wide. But what really made me realize I had turned a corner in my thinking about game graphics was going back to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

The graphics in Oblivion always amazed me even after six plus years, but this week, not so much. It looked old to me. Part of that was my TV at my friend’s place, which is not 1080p, but part of it is just that I have now seen the next generation of video game graphics. From here on out, I will be looking forward to the new consoles and will be considering a PS4/Killzone bundle. I will likely wait because of the cost, but I am not just sitting back just satisfied with what I have anymore.

Sorry, I don't want to be this guy, but I just can't be that excited. Those graphics in killzone are graphics I'm getting pretty close to on a midrange pc. They just aren't that mindblowing when compared to past leaps.

I agree. That is why I am staying current gen and retro. There is so much they could do what they have now.

Leaps now are small but noticeable. I was thinking today that Oblivion is a bad comparison. I should compare a game like God of War Ascension or last year's COD: MW3. The differences would probably be pretty minimal. I don't know though, I'm still thrilled to play Killzone: Shadowfall sometime when I can afford a PS4.

Current gen mario looks so good too.

I saw the Rayman Origins game on Wii-U a while back and was really impressed.

Yeah, it's crazy how the arrival of the new generation is making games that looked great yesterday suddenly look pretty dated. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing...

It's inevitable - sigh - that improvements will come along and make your beloved games look lousy. I guess, though, that a game like Wizardry, with almost no graphics, is still appealing to me despite all that.

Huh. I always thought Oblivion was ugly lol. I just can't seem to get excited for graphics anymore but hey, I was happy with the GameCube Smile

The characters' faces in the game are hideous, but the environments are sweet. I'm a sucker for good environment art. It's the hiker in me.

the only think I'm looking forward to with the new gen systems and games coming out is all the deep discounts we'll hopefully see with Wii/PS3/Xbox 360 titles. There are so many games on those systems I need to savor!

Yea, I just went on a binge of this-gen games and am contemplating a second run. As soon as the new system's games start hitting Gamestops on November 15, they'll be trying to get rid of last gen stuff with lots of sales. It's a great time to build the collection. I have a few titles in mind like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and WarHammer 40,000 Space Marine for 360 and Afrika for PS3.
