Ok, so here's a great video review of the movie Aliens by James Rolfe in his Monster Madness series for the month of October. It shows the connection and influence of this movie to video games very well. I never really thought about it too much but this movie was and is a huge influence on video games (Contra and Metroid especially) and vice versa.

Watch his previous video on Alien too. I forgot it was done in '79. Such a great moody scifi horror flick!

Is James Rolfe good or what. He knows his movies. I love the way he discovers the 50's era movies that influence the new ones. The similarities are uncanny!

I might have to check those links out. Alien is the only movie that has given me nightmares as an adult. I think it's the psychological effect of something chasing you through dark, confined spaces with no where to go that really got to me. Watched it once and called it good. Love Aliens, though. More science fiction and less horror than the first one.

James makes just those points in both reviews. Alien is more psychological and Aliens is more about action. Each review is less than 15 minutes. Perfect length, I think. His Aliens review is so great the way he weaves in the video game connection. As soon as I saw it, I felt I had to do a blog and share it. It's not on youtube yet though, so I couldn't put the video on the blog page.

I love the first Alien film. It was scary, had a great atmosphere and you simply didn't know what was about to happen. I haven't seen Aliens, but I hope to do that, so I can watch the video. I really like the works of James.

They're both great in different ways.

Alien is still one of my favorite sci-fi/horror movies. It had an almost Lovecraftian sense of the unknown to it - it didn't spell everything out for you, and that lent particularly well to the scenes with the space jockey and the derelict ship. The visuals have really held up amazingly well!

I thought it looked better than Star Wars from only two years previous.

that was a great review. I always forget he does more than being the AVGN.

I also heard that the script to this was really short, don't know if that was true or not.

Indeed this was one of my favorate Alien movies. Even now you can see some uses from the movie to other materials be it in tv shows, movies or games.

Apone looks a lot like Avery Johnson from the Halo series...

Not only does Apone look like Avery Johnson, but he talks like him, smokes a big ol' cigar like him, and he is a Sergeant just like Avery. Not only that, I believe there's a scene from the Halo Anniversary game where Sergeant Johnson says Apone's line from Aliens:

Aliens has been influential in so many ways. Thanks for mentioning that comparison. That's totally where they got that character. I'm gonna tell my friend tomorrow all about that 'cause he's always using that Apone line.
