Software Sells the System. What For PS4?

On the night of the PS4 release I began thinking about what game got me to buy a PS3. It was launch day game Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom.

.ULDK

I’ve always been a big fan of games like Gauntlet that allowed co-op action oriented dungeon crawls. I played Gauntlet (four player version) in the arcades, Gauntlet Legends on the Dreamcast, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy and Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes on Xbox, and Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance on PS2. When the first gameplay footage of Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom was shown, I got all excited. This was the first next gen co-op experience I wanted to have. Me and my friend got PS3s and played the game. It was really fun for a while, he playing as a warrior Golan Kor and me the Mage Malakesh, but I found myself continually getting killed by swarming enemies. I could never keep them off of me long enough to heal up, while my friend charged along blissfully crushing enemies with his axe. The magic user always needs support, like a tank needs a squad to keep away enemy with explosives. He’s weak against melee attacks and should have some shield or undead minions to protect him while he unleashes deadly ranged attacks. Needless, to say, I got pissed and rage quit maybe half way through.

Overall, it wasn’t a great experience, but it got me into the PS3, and soon I came across better games like Pixel Junk Monsters, Valkyria Chronicles, and Ni No Kuni. So I was not disappointed with the system.

Tonight at midnight is the launch of the PS4, and I’d like to make Killzone: Shadow Fall the game that got me to buy the system, but the game is just a notch below what I consider a must-buy. I don’t have a friend who’s into it, and it isn’t a co-op game. It’s just another FPS albeit with incredible graphics. So I’ll wait.

So what game got you to buy a PS3 or which one is getting you to buy a PS4?

I got the PS3 a year late for Resistance:  Fall of Man and Ratchet and Clank.  Insomniac's games will definitely get me to go out and get a PS4, or a Naughty Dog game that is not Uncharted.

Yea! I remember wanting Resistance and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. Heavenly Sword as well. I think it was Lair though that really got me going a year or two later. That one wasn't great either. Why do I lust for bad games (sounds like a relationship problem doesn it)?

I completely forgot, but Need for Speed Rivals might be enough of a reason for me to get a PS4 sooner than later.

Wow! Interesting wiki stuff on Need For Speed Rivals. Sounds like EA is getting serious with this series and letting Ghost Games be the exclusive dev for all future Need For Speed games. It's also interesting that a lot of Criterion went over to Ghost, leaving 17 people at Criterion to work on a new project. I'm gonna have to keep an eye on this game and Criterion as well.

Killzone is actually one of the titles pushing me toward the ps4, as well as Thief which releases next year in Feburay.

The trailer for Thief is pretty cool.

Uncharted 2 got me to buy a PS3. Don't regret it one bit. Killzone is enough for a PS4 early since I have enough friends who are getting it so we'll all play together. Without it I'd probably wait for Destiny.

That's what makes it so much better. When you have friends who you can play with right away.

I'm gonna answer both questions

PS3: NCAA Football 09 because of Team Builder. I created a bunch of different schools which was an awesome feature. I wish Madden had this.

PS4: There isn't a "Must Have" for me. I do want to play the new racing games but I can wait a couple of months.

One of those NCAA games let you create a player and take him through a whole career. You could take your player over to Madden once he went pro. That almost got me into Football games. I still want to do that as if it was some strange RPG/Football mash up.

I think that started in 09 too. You play your senior year of high school, pick three schools, and then on signing day, you pick your college. I did it for a season, and then either lost interest or 2010 was being released.

hmmm I don't remember but I was hyped to play Uncharted and the new Wipeout which is a series i love.  I got Valkyria Chronicles too and loved that.

I'm waiting on the PS4, but I don't know if there will be one game that makes me want it.  Though Super Mario 3D World is the one game that makes me want to get a Wii U.

I remember renting Uncharted when it came out through Gamefly. Thought it was really cool. I finally own the game and it would be nice to find the time to replay it.

I got it for...the library. Hey, it was 2011, there were tons of great games lol. I really wanted to play Uncharted 2 though. That was probably at the top of my list.

I must've gotten the system about a year after launch because the 40 GB console I have was released holiday 2007. I think Untold Legends and Lair got me to buy it that Christmas. My buddy and I played Untold and the PSN game Pain. In January we also played Pixel Junk Monsters. That was  the holiday Uncharted came out too. That was a good holiday to get on the PS3 bandwagon. I wonder if a year from now will also be the ideal time to get a PS4.

Dark Kingdom looks up my alley. We had similar tastes back in the day. I played a lot of Champions Of Norrath: Return To Arms, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and X-men Legends.

Kind of a shame Dark Kingdom's difficulty with mobs was a tad off balanced.

I've always wanted to go back to Dark Kingdom and try and beat it. That's why I have it in my collection still. Also played the first PSP game in the series Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade. I beat that one with a friend co-op over its wifi network. It's sequel Warrior's Code however was unfairly hard.

I've always wanted to play Champions of Norrath and it's sequel Return to Arms. They were always at Gamestop and priced higher than I wanted to pay, and so I never picked them up. Played Marvel Ultimate Alliance recently. Did some co-op in that too, but my friend didn't like it much and so we never finished it. I'm pretty sure I tried X-Men Legends. Need to try that one again and see why I didn't finish it.

I really enjoyed Marvel Ultimate Alliance. However, I do think better rpg/beat em up hybrids have released since then. Still, the MUA games are ones I wouldn't mind revisiting. While not perfect I had a good time with them!

X-men Legends is kind of "more in the same" though. In other words, if you didn't dig MUA, X-men Legends doesn't do much differently. (Though it did have a decent story)

I just wanted to play as Doctor Strange all the time in Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

I'm still not sure what game got me to get a PS3.  I rarely play my PS3.  I guess I bought it for the games I couldn't get on the 360.

KnightDriver

11/16/2013 at 03:42 PM

That's how I've been this gen. All cross-platform games I got on 360 and used PS3 and Wii for their exclusives only. I don't know, but I might switch it up this coming gen and make PS4 my cross-platform system. The software coming out in 2014 will decide that for me.

I plan to do the same.

I don't think there was a single game that made me buy a ps3, I just wanted a next-gen platform and just stuck with Sony since I never had an original x-box.

The only time I bought a console due to a "I must have this!!" game was the original playstation. It was my first year in college and I wasn't as into gaming as I used to be, but when I went home for a break (Christmas, i think) one of my friends had the first Tony Hawk game. I spent much of the break playing the game at his house, waiting in line with all the others who wanted too play it too. When I went back to college I couldn't stop thinking about it and went out and bought a playstation, along with Tony Hawk Pro Skater.  It became a huge hit in my dorm, and people would often come play it in my room, even in the middle of the night while I was trying to sleep.

I dont' think I started buying systems for a particular game until Halo made the Xbox a must-have and Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader made me have to get a GameCube. Before that, I just had PS1, N64 and Dreamcast for no particular game really. PS2 had Red Faction and Half-Life, but I waited a while before getting the system since I had played those on PC. Later I discovered JRPGs and lots of other super cool titles for it, but I was mainly an Xbox player that gen. This new generation though. I may make PS4 my favorite. We'll see.

That's cool your dorm room was like the local arcade. There should've been NES or Sega Master Systems around when I was in college, but I don't remember any - only Mac computers.

None of the games offered at launch got me interested in a PS3 with the exception of Resistance: FOM. I originally was going to hold out until the rumored remake of Final Fantasy VII was released but decided to get a phat B/C PS3 when word came out that Sony was getting rid of them.

Nothing on the PS4 really interests me so I'm glad I waited.

I'm setting my sights on a slim PS3 right now. I think in the next year Sony will either reduce the price or offer some sweet special editions like the Silver Slim PS2 I have. I'm going to jump on that. My 40GB fat PS3 just won't do in the long run.
