New Releases that Peaked My Interest This Week

Every week on Tuesday I look through new releases for music, games, and books/comics. It dawned on me yesterday that I should be posting the interesting stuff that I find. DUH! Below are a D&D box set and a Halo game that I’m excited about.

Premium Original Dungeons & Dragons Fantasy Roleplaying Game

                       dndpremium

This is a really nice package of the very first rule set for D&D that came out in 1974. It includes the three basic rule books; what looks like the first two suppliments describing the two fantasy settings for the game: Greyhawk designed by Gary Gygax and Blackmoor designed by Dave Arneson; and two more suppliments describing more spells and deities. The books have new art with some of the orginal art is displayed on the inside of the box top, and there is a full set of dice all contained in a nice wood grain box. I would jump on this in a heartbeat if I had $150 bones lying around, but I don’t so I’ll just have to gaze at it wistfully.

                                            Halo: Spartan Assault [Xbox One]

I’ve been waiting patiently for Halo: Spartan Assault to come out on Xbox 360 this whole month and thought it was coming on December 24th. Apparently that was just the Xbox One version with the 360 version to come out in January sometime. I hate these unreliable release dates for Xbox Live downloadable titles. You never know what’s coming when until the day it actually drops. It’s so annoying! Anyway this is a twin stick shooter in the Halo Universe. It's top down view reminds me strongly of the Halo Wars RTS. I can't wait!

That D&D set is sick! I would love to have that bad boy!

It's pretty nice. I'd love to play with the original rule set once too.

I like the D&D set. I was in on that shit from the ground floor. I think I threw out my monster manual and dungeon master's manual a while back. Had to, I was overruled by a higher authority. I got the "why are you keeping this stuff if you're never going to use it again?" speech. LOL

'cause you will use it. When the geek phoenix rises from the ashes again.

I don't play D&D, but I really dig the vintage look of that set.

I also don't play RTS and only occasionally dabble in Halo multiplayer if somone has it and is inviting me to play when I'm bored, but that looks neat as well.

I guess I'm shallow today, looks are all that's important to me. lol

Halo games always look pretty sweet, plus it's the only thing coming out in January that has any interest for me. Now February is another thing. I've got a long list for that month already. I can't wait.

Aside from Tropical Freeze and maybe Lords of Shadow II, I don't see much that would interest me in February. March has some good ones, like the South Park game and Blazblue, though. Plus, MGSV and inFamous: Second Son looked really cool.

Not that any of this matters, because it's not like my PC will run any of these games, except maybe South Park: Stick of Truth. lol

There's Earth Defense Force 2025, Fable Anniversary, Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze that I'm looking at getting.

whoah that D&D box set is sweet.  I would love to get into that again, but the situation just isn't here right now.

I just realized that 2014 is the 40th anniversary of D&D. I was wondering why something like this was being made.

I am pretty excited about Spartan Assault too. I have it on my Windows Phone and it is fun, but the on-screen controls are as bad as I expected. I haven't gotten very far because of that. The launch dates for the game have been confusing for every "platform" it's come out on. It came out on Verizon phones before AT&T phones and other confusing details.

Anyway, from what I've played on the phone, I can tell it is going to be pretty fun with a controller. Guess we'll find out for sure soon.

Hey, I know that a 360 controller works on Windows tablets. Wonder if you could get an adapter to make it work with a Windows phone. :D

I have confirmed that the 360 controller does work with Halo Spartan Assault so all you need is a usb to micro USB adapter for your phone and you'll be able to play it. LOL

It looks pretty good on my Surface RT. Too bad I don't like Halo.

Whoa, that would be weird. I'd try it if I didn't have to buy an adapter.

One of the things I like about the Surface RT is the full sized USB port. You can plug a 360 wired controller or the PC 360 Controller which is exactly the same thing but 20 bucks cheaper. I've found that a lot of games from the Windows Store work.

That is a cool feature. I rarely like any sort of touch screen game controls.

Well, since I couldn't play Spartan Assault I went back and finished Halo 4 finally. Now I'm on the Spartan Ops missions and may do some multiplayer in that mode that used to be called Firefight and whose new name I forget. I'm not much for competitive multi, just whatever is like Gear's Horde mode.

I need to finish the Spartan Ops missions someday too.

I'd love to get into some sort of table top RPG but, alas, you need friends physically there with you to play. I am out of luck Undecided

My problem too. I just met someone whose a serious Magic player though. I may do a little of that.

So that's whats to become of the Spartan game on 360. Was wondering if it was just Xbox One since I"ve been hearing words that Arcade is DEAD on 360, as in no more new releases.

There's still new stuff coming to Xbox 360 as DL, they're just not calling it Xbox Live Arcade anymore which means devs can choose to make a free demo or not. That kinda sucks. But Spartan Assault is still not out on 360. It's supposed to arrive in January and there is gamer pictures for it you can buy out already, so I'm sure it's coming. I just wish it'd drop already. Also, I heard an opinion of it on the Vidjagame Apocalypse podcast by the guy who does the KOXM (Official Xbox Magazine) podcast who says isn't all that great, but I still want to give it a run. It's Halo afterall.

same here. Heard the same news, thus the excuse to release this title on other non windows phone devices. I'll still get it anyhow. Afterall I got Halo Wars and I'm not much of an RTS fan myself.
