In which I catalog the releases I most desire in 2014, and others that may come out in 2014 or 2015.

Prepare to Awesome

The king dingaling right here. The one true god game, put no game before it. The third installment in the Series of The 7th Generation looks to sport a return to Demon's Souls dreadful atmospherics and a simultaneously more complex and refined take on its unique online component.

These games are the modern day Castlevanias as far as I'm concerned, done right in 3D, not that other game coming out this year where you will be mashing out 20 hit combos in arena style fights.  They have the same draw and inspire the imagination in the same way that CV did for me in its peak years on NES, SNES, Turbo Duo, and PS1. In fact, you could fit quite a few old classics into the frame that From Software has provided with each of their Souls games. There have been times where the world structures, atmosphere, and/or combat have evoked the likes of early Legend of Zeldas, Metroid, Rondo of Blood, Diablo 1, Faxanadu, King's Field, and Vagrant Story.

Going by what I've seen and read so far, From Software has raised their own bar in sumptuous enemy design, grand and forebidding environments, multiplayer innovation, and challenge. The only question remains: PS3 or PC?

Praise dat sun

Completely agree with the comparison to CV. This is the granddaddy of games. I can't wait. It is so hard but Dark Souls keeps me occupied.

Yep. It and Demon's Souls are those rare games where I just want to walk around the world and fight/interact with stuff, not caring about progress, just be in the game. I've spent hours just running around and stabbing enemies, rolling off of high surfaces, making death defying jumps.

The atmosphere and world's are amazing. I remember when I first started playing Dark Souls and just wandering around and I was like just so lost at where to go first. I was use to the linearness of games that I had to go a certain way first. And soon I found that I can go whichever way I want first and try my luck.

I wasn't a fan of Demon's Souls, mostly because the combat didn't click with me. I get why people like it, just didn't like the way everything moved and felt. Dark Souls has always appealed to me more though because of the Metroidvania approach though, feel like that could be enough to keep me going until the combat does click. Maybe some day I'll give it a go.

Depends on how exacting you are in your Metroid requirements. You don't get any physical powers that let you pass obstacles. It's just keys and doors for the most part. But it does have back tracking, secrets (althoug not hidden in walls) and a bit of "choose your path." So I don't know if that's enough Metroidvania-ness to offset the heavy combat focus.

I have yet to touch Dark Souls, but I do of course have Demon's Souls. I like it because it's a throwback to old-school dungeon crawling such as I enjoyed on the Atari 8-bit computers. Those computers were great gaming computers and had a few rather good RPGs. I may as well take the plunge on Dark Souls II.

If these games were in first person, they'd feel just like the King's Field games and Ultima Underworld. And Shadow Tower Abyss, which I recommend finding and playing on an emulator as soon as you get a chance.  It's even darker than Demon's Souls, and has that niche Japanese flavor that a lot of mid budget games had back in the PS1/PS2/Dreamcast days.

My computer experience back then was limited to my friend's C64. It's where I had my first taste of western video role-playing and adventure games. Well, besides Oregon Trail on my elementary school's Apple 2C.

Like the very subtle samurai look of the featured protagonist in the DS2 premotional art. I played a bit of DS 1 and thought it was alright. My interactive introduction to it dismissed all the absurd rumors. Certainly it was "tough" but it was also fair.

I was going to get it but then Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen went on sale for dirt cheap. It's a good game too,by the way. But I understand if you don't want to put more coin in capcom's grubby paw!

Yeah, I have Dark Arisen. I would put it along side the Souls games in the top tier of action-RPGs of the generation.  Haven't done much of the extra content though.

I remember wandering around Demon's Souls and opening a door which revealed a giant troll or something. It, of course, flayed me every which way. The surprise of that was pretty awesome. I love the environments in that game.

Most people seem to prefer the continuous world of Dark Souls, but Demon's Souls has more memorable environments, in my opinion.

I was so in love with the trailers for Demon's Souls. I can't find some of them now. I'm so mad about that.

I bought Dark Souls last year but still haven't got to it. Spent too much time on my 3DS.
