I think Hayao Miyazaki is the greatest mind in the fantasy genre since Tolkien. Every time he has delved into the genre, he has delivered an inspired, unique, and dazzling work.  Hyper Light Drifter isn't a game based on one of these works, it isn't even being made by a Japanese studio  But the visuals, the designs of environments and beings instantly gering to mind Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, and Nausicaa. It's a visual feast of modern pixel art.  I've grown to like this visual aesthetic, among which I would include the likes of Cave Story, Superbrothers: Swords and Sworcery, and the upcomig Super Time Force. It's like an alternate universe of old school console games, where 8-bit simplicity met 16-32 bit animation fluidness and resolution, played on a super NES before the actual Super NES came out. Put another way, it's like if Nintendo was influenced by Impressionist art and, in the case of HLD, modern Gainax instead of American cartoon classics and Osamu Tezuka.

Beyond visuals, this looks to be neo-classic in play mechanics, the developers citing such works as A Link To The Past and Diablo. but "evolved" they claim, with lightening fast combat, more mobility, and an array of tactical options.

Miyazaki-esque designs, Zelda, and Diablo? What's not to like?!

I kickstarted this one as well.  I cannot wait for it to come.

I do like Miyazaki, even started a relationship while watching Princess Mononoke with my ex, but I think this has its own distinct style, which I'm liking as far as visuals.

I haven't seen the other two movies you mentioned, though (of his work, I've seen Laupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and clips from most all his other works, due to JesuOtaku's reviews of them, but not the full films), so you may be seeing the influence more than I am because of that.

Either way, it looks great, and I do love me some Zelda. Never played Diablo, but the trailer for this makes me think I would like it.

Castle in the Sky is a big influence not only on this game, but many Japanese games that have come out over the past 27 years.
