Fortune Cookie Picks

It’s March now and I don’t have any preorders this month, so I want to buy something. It’s in the budget so it’s ok, but what do I get? My wishlist is almost 200 games strong. I just can’t decide - Fortune Cookie randomizer on Backloggery.com to the rescue!

The first title to appear was Art Style: ORBIENT on WiiWare.

                                                           It's got black holes!

I remember wanting this game way, way back when I had just got my Wii. This is a very beautiful game featuring the game-play of the physics of gravity in space between heavenly bodies – and I mean planets and suns not breasts and buns. I’m a huge astronomy fan and always wanted some sort of simulation of space to play with. I downloaded it on my Wii after buying a DSi points card. It works for Wii purchases as well.

Then I had the bug again a day later and hit the old Fortune Cookie button again. What came up but Dragon Warrior III for NES. Well, this game was remade and improved for Super Famicon and Game Boy Color I found out. Turns out I have the Game Boy Color version already and can play it on the big screen with my GameCube Game Boy Player. So I removed it from my list. It could be cool to play the original NES version, but it’s not essential, so on to another pick.

Another click brought up Super Paper Mario for Wii. I have Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, but haven’t played it yet. I always thought, since I liked the RPG take on Mario with the Mario & Luigi games, that I would like the Paper Mario games too. So I’ve put them on my list and just need to find the time to play them. I looked for Super Paper Mario new at BestBuy because it’s out as a Nintendo Selects title for $20, but no luck so I had to go to Gamestop and get it used after trading in a few 360 games (Shaun White Snowboarding and Lost Planet: Extreme Condition). There’s no booklet in the copy I got. Boo! But I got it.

That's what the Gamestop guy said, but I figured he was just blowing smoke up my trousers.

It warmed the cockles of my heart. Such a tease though.

I've got Yoshi's New Island pre-ordered for next week, but that's it in March.  At the beginning of May I've got Kirby Triple Deluxe and Mario Golf: World Tour pre-ordered.

Mario Golf sounds interesting. I'll have to watch a vid of that.

Did not realize you could do that with the fortune cookie. Holy Moly that is freakin awesome. I got to try that when I get some income.

Yea and you can limit the pick in many different ways. I do one just for handhelds and then another for wishlist and I'll do another for everything minus handhelds when I finish with Borderlands 2.

I love the Mario RPGs and Thousand Year Door is phenomenal, but I do not like Super Paper Mario. It has great characters and a poignant story but as a hybrid of the platform and RPG genres, all the gameplay feels halfbaked. You'll probably enjoy it for what it is though, but definitely play the Thousand Year Door!

I have to get to that one. The acronym "RPG" can get me into just about anything.

I loved Super Paper Mario.  It was a lot of fun.  I only played an hour of thousand year door.  I think they are totally different.  Super Paper Mario is not a jrpg.

I was just about to say that. Super Paper Mario has the RPG elements removed. Thousand Year Door is however very RPG-ee. :) Like everyone else said, play that one first.

I watched trailers for both. Looks like Super Paper Mario is straight platformer. Ah well, I like the art style and some of the gameplay elements look interesting.

I liked Super Paper Mario, though I agree with everyone else that you should play Thousand Year Door ASAP.

I've always wanted to try those Paper Mario games because of how they look. Shame that Best Buy didn't have a new copy, but at least you found a copy at GameStop.

It just dawned on me that Tearaway wasn't the first game to use paper art as part of the design. Paper Mario's been doing it since 2000.

I need to look into that WiiWare title. I've so far only bought the WiiWare titles from major publishers so it wouldn't hurt to branch out on what it has to offer, besides trying to buy all the NeoGeo titles offered on there. The last Blade 1 and 2 are a steal on there.

DSi points cards work on the Wii to? I'll need to keep that in mind.

There's still some cool stuff on WiiWare. I better get to it soon before they turn off the lights.
