Taito Legends [Xbox], collecting 29 arcade games, is organized in a straightforward way. You just scroll left to right over the games. Each game has its own mini-menu where you can check the control scheme and find history, interviews and cabinet art. I was surprised at how many games I liked, 9 in this collection. I’ll do three at a time.

In Battle Shark you are in a futuristic submarine. You fire in first person at other subs, fish armed with bombs, and boss subs. Bubbles cross the screen off and on that you can shoot for special ammo. The arcade machine had a periscope controller like arcade games Periscope and Sea Wolf. I found the game addicting and played to the end thanks to infinite continues.

The graphic of the Battle Shark sub on the title screen is very anime. It reminds me of something out of Starblazers.

Bubble Bobble is super awesome! You are a Bubble Dragon and jump around a screen full of platforms and blow bubbles to trap enemies. Then you pop them to oblivion with your spiny back or stomp them. If you pop a bunch of them at once food items appear around the screen which give you points. Some levels have water running through them that becomes another obstacle or an aid, depending on how you use it. I got really hooked on this and kept playing for a while. I will definitely be returning to this game again.

Bubble Bobble is most recently available on the 3DS and Wii-U e-shop

Gladiator is an interesting game. You are a knight in armor and move left to right through a 2D side-scrolling environment blocking flying objects and fighting single enemies with a sword. You have three angles of sword thrust and shield blocking: high, middle and low. As you get hit, you lose pieces of your armor and then if you get hit in the spot again, you die. You have to do the same to your opponent. These few choices give you a surprising amount of challenge. I found the fights exciting and strategic. You have to block your opponents thrust and get around his/her shield with your own. You also have to block thrown objects and flying bats before each fight. If you pick up swords on the ground you can become briefly invincible. I really liked knocking pieces of armor off my opponents. Sometimes I had them down to their undies before I stuck it in. Ha Ha!

There was a sequel Blandia but it’s not available as far as I can see.

This is a great collection of arcade games. I've got six more to blab about in the next two blogs.

yay Bubble Bobble! DO you have Elevator Action on that thing?

Yea, but I couldn't figure it out. You shoot stuff, move down the elevator, but then it goes back up. It's hard to dodge bullets. Help!

you want to get down to the base of the building.  that's how you win the level.

Battle Shark didn't seem too memorable on Taito Legends.  I like that you mentioned StarBlazers.  I used to watch that show when I was a kid.  Did you know that in Japan, they just had a StarBlazers remake?

Bubble Bobble is freaking awesome and one of my favorite Taito games.  My brother Jeff and I used to always play it together when he was young.  Great game to play with kids.  I also like the puzzle game Puzzle Bobble.  It's one of my top three puzzle games and even my mom likes to play it.

I remember Gladiator in the arcades, but I didn't like it much.  The big draw with this game, if I remember correctly, is the large character graphics.  They really stood out at the time.

I always get mixed up on which games are on Taito Legends 1 and 2.  But Taito is one of my favorite game companies.  Lots of history in that company.

If you have a DS, you should track down Arkanoid DS, also by Taito.  it's really fun and the music was so good, I imported the soundtrack.  Zuntata, Taito's iin-house band, is awesome.

What system is Puzzle Bobble on anyway. The wiki page say's it was called Bust-a-Move in the U.S. and came out on the Neo Geo, but there are a ton of systems listed for it and a bunch of sequels and remakes for all sorts of systems. I've having trouble figuring it all out.

I'll put Arkanoid DS on my wishlist too. Sounds good.

Yeah, Puzzle Bobble is called Bust-A-Move in the US, but I hate that name so I try to call it Puzzle Bobble.  it's on pretty much every system imaginable.

Yea, it's all over the place. I put a bunch of them on my wishlist. Sequels, remakes, all of them.

I have both volumes of Taito Legends for the PS2...but I haven't played them yet. These sound cool though. You know, I've never played Bubble Bobble.

You think before trying Bubble Bobble, "ah baby game", but then you try it and you're like "oh cool, this is a challenge and really creative".

I made a point of giving every game a good try and was surprised to find I liked a lot of them.

Bubble Bobble looks like a lot of fun. I'll try to keep it in mind the next time I have money in my 3DS eShop account.

It gets super fast paced after a while.

I have never played Bubble Bobble, but I did know about the two dragons (Bub and Bob I think) thanks to Bust-a-Move. I remember playing the Nintendo 64 version on an emulator.

The name Bust-a-Move is so hipster. I wish they just kept the name Puzzle Bobble for the U.S..

I was terrible at the pariscope games. I used to end up looking at the screen...and still had problems.

I never played Bubble Bobble. I think that was one of those games I used to see everywhere on Playstation, never bought, but then became a hard game to find when I wanted to give it a try. The little dragons do look familar though from Bust A Move.

I always thought Bubble Bobble was a puzzle game but that was Puzzle Bobble which was called Bust-a-Move in NA. There are a lot of those out there. I'm going to try and play at least some of them.

Yup those puzzle games were fun, especially if you played against someone.

I love me some bubble bobble. I actually bought the NES version of this game off the Wii's VC! I even remember playing this game at a local pizza joint that wasn't a pizza hut. I recall also getting a giant piece of cake as a bonus in the game and for the life of me I don't know how I did it.

I think maybe if you pop a whole bunch of enemies all at once you get a piece of cake. I know I got something like that for doing it by accident.
