Taito Legends - Space Gun

spacegun

This is an on-rails shooter from 1990 with a sci/fi setting, which is very similar to the Alien movies. I mean, the aliens look a little like the alien from the movies and there are even face huggers and egg pods. It’s a lot like the alien movies. You are on a space station infested with alien monsters orbiting an alien planet and have to rescue as many humans as possible. Then you go to the alien planet surface. You have a time limit for each level and a health meter just like in the Halo games, with a regenerating shield and a health meter underneath it. [actually not. The meter is actually the amount of gun overheating and the health bars are just the health bars.] The game is very gory with alien blood everywhere and bloody chunks flying off in all directions. Sometimes you have to shoot off limbs, Dead Space style, before the alien goes down.

You can pick up other weapon types and activate them by the pump action of the gun peripheral on the cabinet. The cabinet also has foot pedals (see pic above) that, when pressed, turn you around so you can shoot behind you. In playing the port on Taito Legends, I wasn’t aware of either of these features (the flame thrower activated as soon as I picked it up) but perhaps I just missed them by not reading the instructions. Stupid me.

If you want to play a home version with a light gun, the most recent port is on the Sega Master System. Why Taito didn’t add light gun support for the several games that use it on Taito Legends is beyond me. How hard would that be to do? Grrr.

Here’s the short Classic Game Room review video of Space Gun.

The Sega Master system is actually THE system to own for those old lightgun games.  That console had a lot of them, and really good ones too.  I have a SMS, and I had a lightgun and a bunch of the games back about ten years ago, but they got lost in time.

Sold. I put it on my wishlist.

Space Gun didn't really stick out in my mind on the collection.  What an uoriginal game name, though.  That's  like naming a game "Shoot Stuff" or "Don't Lose."

I agree, it's a horrible name. Very generic. They should name it after the alien creatures, but they never tell you their name.

Well, the names of the alien creatures are "Lil' Bunnykins" so no, I do not think that would be a good name for the game.

And yes I did just make that up.

I actually like the game more because of the name. I like how the guy in the video says it, too. I've always found that 90s/Monster Truck Rally kind of announcer voice amusing.

Yea, the opening screen is pretty cool I like the font they used for Space Gun and the way it's in front of the alien face, gold on green and purple.

I have Taito Legends vol.2. I found it almost on accident. I didn't even know Taito had made any anthology collections. I need to track the first one down. I kind of remember playing this game once somewhere.

I think I got Taito Legends 2 first because I had to have a copy of Front Line and that was the only collection that had it; the arcade perfect port that is.

I think the main selling point for me was Elevator Action Returns. We had that one at our arcade back when I was in high school. My best friend and I used play the hell out of that game. Memories...Tongue Out.

The first Elevator Action was on Taito Legends 1, and I couldn't seem to do it without getting continually shot. I wasn't quite sure what the goal was in the game either. Stupid me.

Looks fun, though I'd probably wouldn't make it that far before dying repeatedly.

You get infinite ammo, so all you have to do is beat the time limit, and watch that your weapon doesn't overheat. The final screen has you shoot aliens but you can't shoot the cockpit of your shuttle right behind them or be stranded on the alien planet. I blew up my shuttle the first time I played it.

You know I've never played a game on a Master System. I wish there were more light gun games.

As for this game, I don't think I've ever played it (I'm basing this on not remembering that cabinet). I used to like gun games because they were the games that had a different controller than conventional games.

This one has pump action and a foot pedal! Next time I'm in an arcade, I'm going to look for Space Gun. I've never played the cabinet either.

It's a shame we don't have many light gun games anymore.

Yea, there's so few of them. I did try and find a Wii-Zapper last weekend. No luck there, but then i didn't go to Gamestop; however, I think they don't care periferals like that anymore. I need one for Wii and PS3. I have Umbrella Chronicles on Wii and I'd like to get Razing Storm and the House of the Dead games for PS3.

I saw a gun periferal that comes with the latest Cabela game but I think it only works for some of the Cabelas games and not all of them in addition to not working for other light gun games, if I remember right. That kinda sucks.

The Wii doesn't have a light gun, that I know of.  You'll just find a plastic gun shaped thing to put your Wiimote in.  I think it's the same for the PS3 too.  Though, the PS3 does have that one game series that uses a actual light gun.  I have it, but I'm missing the senors you have to use to put on your tv.  I want to get the senor, but many places want $20 for that thing.

Yea, both are just plastic things you put the wiimote and Move sensors into, but it's nice to have the branded stuff to make you feel just a little bit extra bad ass; although, I could strap those sensors to a real gun and. . . "Danger, danger, Will Robinson!" "Aw gee robot. You're such a party pooper."

I agree there. Nazi's do need killin'. Did you see there's another Nazi killin' game coming in June? It's Enemy Front. It uses CryEngine3 and looks really sweet.
