2:00 pm – I set up the PS2 and Taito Legends 2, a large collection of arcade games made by Taito.

                                         ak

This icy spot gave me fits. I just couldn't miss hitting that tree every time.

I played Alpine Ski first which is a top down skiing game. I didn’t like the controls much and only a played a few minutes.

                       am

Yield to my multi-armed purple genie beatches!

Then played Arabian Magic which is a brawler with an Arabian theme that lets you use bosses you’ve beaten as a special move. You store them in a lantern and call them up when you need them. It’s pretty cool. I’ll do a separate blog on the game sometime soon. With infinite continues, I finished the whole game. Graphics are really nice too.

                                 columns

Color it Super Street Fighter and you got Super Puzzle Fighter.

3:45 – Took a break to play some PSP and Sega Genesis Collection’s Columns. Just a match three game that’s been reused in many other games such as my favorite Super Puzzle Fighter Ii Turbo. It’s simple fun and perfect on a handheld.

                        bb

Sounds more like a cannon than an artilery piece.

Went back to PS2 and Taito Legends 2. Played Balloon Bomber which is basically like Space Invaders but with a WWI theme. You man anti-aircraft weapon and shoot at balloons carrying bombs. When the bombs drop they make craters that impede your movement. That kinda makes the game a little frustrating as you end up unable to move eventually. What struck me about it was the sound of the anit-aircraft weapon which sounds like an old fashioned artillery piece.

                                   ba

Have at thee ghost, with my beads of Budhism!

Then I played Bonze Adventure, a platform game where you’re a Buddist Monk who shoots out beads at enemies. It’s a pretty cool game but I found some of the platform challenges overly difficult. I died one too many times and bugged out.

                                bam

Then was Bust-A-Move, another match-three game but you shoot marbles up from the bottom of the screen as it slowly decends. It was fine. The shooting device you use reminds me of Peggle graphically.

                               c

Which way is up? Woa! Woa!

Then was Cameltry which is a kind of Marble Madness game but with a top down view and in 2D. You don’t control the ball here though, but the maze that the ball falls through. It almost made me dizzy.  You have a time limit to get to the exit and various obsticles to avoid. Eventually you can add acceleration to the ball to make it bounce off objects or blast through walls. It was ok. I moved on after the easy set of boards.

4:30 – Off to work.

                                   cz

2:00 am – Played some Comix Zone on PSP’s Sega Genesis Collection. This is a very cool game. It’s a 2D brawler but you’re in a comic book and move from painted cell to painted cell and have to use items to solve some environmental puzzles. It looks really good on the PSP. I’ve played this on the Genesis Console and I think it looks better on PSP.

- End Log.

That's what I was thinking when I was putting in the images to this blog. It's easy to rip through a lot of games on these collections of old arcade games. Most of them are pretty short. I'm saving just a few to write more about and replay. Ones that really interest me a lot.

When I was little I saw Alpine Ski in nearly every arcade, but I never really liked it.

I enjoyed playing that Arabian beat 'em up game on Taito Legends 2.  It had a neat theme and fun characters.

Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo is WAY better than Columns!

Balloon Bomber isn't that great, but there are some neat advanced strategies to playing the game and getting a high score, though.

Bonze Adventure isn't that great, but i do like all the Yokai themes in it.

Bust-A-Move is one of my all time favorite puzzle games.  In fact, I just wrote a review of one of them.  I hate the name Bust-A-Move, though.  i wish they would've just kept the original name: Puzzle Bobble.  Anyway, here's that review:

http://www.gamerdad.com/blog/2014/05/19/bust-a-move-4-ps3/

I also love Cameltry.  It's also known as On the Ball in the US.

Comix Zone was cool and way ahead of its time, but also way too hard.

Yea, Super Puzzle Fighter is the best.

A lot of the games on Taito L2 had really good elements like a great art style or interesting gameplay, but I only put eight of them on my favorites list in the menu system: Arabian Magic, Cleopatra's Fortune, Darius Gaiden, Dungeon Magic, Elevator Action II (or Returns), G-Darius, Lunar Rescue, and Puchi Carat.

It seems several of the games have different titles for the US like Elevator Action Returns is Elevator Action II and Puzzle Bobble 2 is Bust-A-Move. There are probably more too like the Cameltry/On the Ball you mentioned.

Comix Zone is kinda hard. Not being able to continue after being killed is really annoying.

Read your review. I liked another game like it a little better called Puchi Carat in TL2. You use a paddle like Breakout instead of a launcher like in Bust-A-Move; you also fight your opponent just like in Super Puzzle Fighter; and it has wacky characters you can choose from that do animations as you play just like in SPF.

Oh yeah, I knew about Puchi Charat already.  A cute puzzle game with colorful characters with combined gameplay elements from two of my favorite Taito games (Arkanoid and Puzzle Bobble)?  Yeah I was familiar with Puchi Charat long before Taito Legends came along.

Speaking of Arkanoid, one cool thing about Arkanoid DS is that you can edit the look of your flipper and blocks to make the game look like Puchi Charat!

Arkanoid DS is on my wishlist.

I've never even heard of Comix Zone but it looks great. I really enjoy games that use a comic book effect like XIII on the Xbox

Yea, I like cell-shaded stuff too. Comix Zone is unique in that you are actually in the pages of a comic book and play within each cell.

I wish there were more games set in Arabia.

I guess there's the Prince of Persia games and Disney's Aladdin on Genesis. That's all I can think of. . . What if the next Assassin's Creed was based in ancient Persia. That would be wild. . . Although, Arabia isn't exactly Persia is it. Persia is present day Iran and Arabia is that land mass that includes Saudi Arabia. Now I'm confused.

Arabian Magic and Comix Zone look awesome. I remember Alpine Ski on PC, but with much simpler graphics.

The graphics in both those games are luscious. Alpine Ski? Not so much.

Oh there are some favorites on your list

Columns: Oh this is one of the first match games I ever played. It was a game I used to play a lot of on the Game Gear in high school (this was my normal everyday thing on the bus)

Bust A Move: A favorite in college. My friends and I tried to play the Japanese version on the Playstation, and once we figured out which button combo got us to the multiplayer it was on!

Comix Zone: I never played it on Genesis but loved it on when PS+ gave it as their freebie game.

That Arabian Magic game looks interesting.

I only got into match three games when Puzzle Quest and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix came out. I like my puzzle games mixed with other gameplay elements.

Oh I love me some Super Puzzle Fighter. Bought it on the Capcom Puzzle World for the PSP and I wish it was available on the Vita.

Oh cool! Another great PSP collection. I got to get that.

I have SPF2 on GBA, and my friend has the PS1 version. I've only played the XBLA version though. Why that version isn't on Vita or 3DS is a mystery to me. It's so good and I want to play the HD version on the go. Where's the remixed soundtrack too? I want that sooooo bad.

I remember plating Cameltry on a emulator, only that I think it had another name.

Comix Zone is a very cool game (if very hard). I discovered it thanks to Sonic Mega Collection Plus which had it as a sort of "guest" game.

Cameltry was also called On The Ball. You can thank Cary for telling me that one.

Wow these games look awesome. I might have to look for a copy of this game.

I just found out that the PS2 and Xbox versions each have four different games each, so to get them all, you have to get both versions. That's just low Taito.

That Arabian Magic game looks pretty cool. Also wouldn't mind trying out Bust-A-Move, though I'm bad at puzzle games.

The puzzle games that speed up really drive me crazy. I really liked Puzzle Quest because you had a little time to plan a strategy.

I want that taito collection for my original Xbox. So far I haven't been able to find any at the usual stores I frequent.

I'd like a Xbox copy too. Four extra games not on the PS2 version, plus I like all my multiplatform games on Xbox.
