The Fairyland Story? More like The Creepy Confectioner Story.

2:15 - Honestly, the rest of the games in Taito Legends 2 didn’t appeal to me that much and there’s not much I have to say about them except the last one. There’s: Raimais, a maze game like Pac-Man with cars; RayStorm, a polygonal shooter that reminds me of Star Fox; Syvalion, where you are a dragon flying through a maze and flaming enemies. My dragon barely fit in the passages – that’s what she said; The Fairyland Story, a platform game where you use magic to turn enemies into cakes and then push them off the platform – sick, just sick; Legend of Kage, a ninja fighting game whose controls I didn’t like; and Violence Fight, a one-on-one fighting game – a style that bores me because there’s no exploration.

                                          flyers.arcade-museum.com is the best

Wild Western is a top down shooter with a cool idea. You are a sheriff on horseback trying to fend off bandits from a train. You shoot at the approaching horsemen and then jump on the train to fend off any bandits that get on. Thing is, I couldn’t get past the horse riding part because you only shoot in one direction with little room to maneuver, the train being in the way. While trying to get a good shot, I touched the train and my horse got stuck there and I was dragged through the station unable to move or shoot. When the train passed the station, I died. I wasn’t going to keep playing a game of Weekend at Bernie’s. This could have been a great game with better shooting mechanics.

That was the last game in the collection for PS2, but there are four more games on the Xbox version which I don’t have yet. I saved nine favorites in the playlist you can create in the PS2 version: Arabian Magic, Cleopatra Fortune, Darius Gaiden, Dungeon Magic, Elevator Action II (or Returns), G-Darius, Growl, Lunar Rescue, and Puchi Carat. I’m going to do a blog on each later.

3:00 – A break to play some Comix Zone on my PSP. I’m still triggering the “do you want to leave the game, yes/no” screen somehow. The Hold button is not the answer. That just freezes all the buttons. Balls!!!

3:35 – Started Sega Genesis Collection on PS2.

Alex Kidd is a pain. The movement is too slippery and imprecise. I still can’t figure out how to use the pogo stick even though I acquired it through winning at rock, paper, scissors. Grrrr!

Altered Beast is also a pain. I got to the second level, but always got beat there. “Rise from your grave.” You know what? I think I’ll stay dead.

Bonanza Bros. just baffles me. You have to avoid being noticed by cops while stealing things in a 2D building, but they always notice you. I just started shooting, but still didn’t get far.

Columns is just your match-three game in a Tetris style. Nothing to see here.

Comix Zone is fun but hard. It still looks better on PSP.

Decap Attack is an infuriating platform game with the novel ability to throw your own head at enemies. I wanted to throw my own head after a while.

"Why can't I jump like you guys?"

Ecco the Dolphin, its sequel Tides of Time, and its kid’s version Ecco Jr. are all a pain in the control stick. It handles like some flight-sim games I’ve played where you have to make circles just to turn around. I also had trouble jumping over islands and obstacles with the dash move because you can’t see the target at that speed ‘til the last second due to limited screen space. So annoying! I really want to love the Ecco games. I love underwater stuff and the graphics are lovely.

                        f

"Ee chee wa maa! Look at the cute Elephant. Luu."

Flicky is a total kiddie platform game where you are a bird saving baby chicks from foxes. When you die you hear a rubber toy being squeezed that sounds just like Ernie’s rubber ducky in Sesame Street - Cats meow and everything. “Overly cute a cuddly this one is. To Ewoks give.”

Gain Ground is like Gauntlet, a top-down view medieval warfare game, but with a fixed screen environment. I hated the controls - shoot and move on the same stick? Bah! It was so hard to hit targets without getting hit yourself. “Your father smells of elderberries!”

Finally, Kid Chameleon, a side scrolling platform game with, granted, some interesting ideas, but I got to a cave area and got completely stuck with no way out. Wah?!

Fairykland story looks kind of like Legacy Of The Wizard but the later is probably much better. (It's sort of akin to a precursor of cave-story with multiple characters)

I remember being smitten by Ecco mainly because of the vibrant graphics. The Genesis could really push the limits in the proper hands! I admit the controls in the Ecco games were not the greatest though.

I'm getting a better grip on the controls playing Ecco on the PSP at the moment. We'll see how long that lasts though.

Hey I liked Raimais.  I didn't like The Fairyland Story as much as I thought I would, though.  Can you believe it came out a full year before Bubble Bobble?  I wasn't very good at Wild Western, either.

Alex Kidd sucks. Altered Beast does too but it does crack me up when they power-up.  But I love Bonanza Bros. and Flicky!  --Cary

Flicky might actually be kinda good, I just didn't give it much of a chance. It seemed too simple to me on first play. I do that sometimes, just charge through a game and miss some of the mechanics. Like in The Fairyland Story, I turned a guy into a cake and then said, "Now what?" and was about to quit when my friend yelled over my shoulder, "push them off the platform dummy!" and I said, "Oh yea." Maybe I was getting arcade game fatigue near the end of this collection.

By the way, I'm having a better time with Ecco the Dolphin on PSP right now. I'm hoping I can stick with it. I want to see all of the game.

I never really liked Ecco the Dolphin.  I like the IDEA of a game starring a dolphin, just not the gameplay found in the series.

There are very few underwater games out there. Undertow on XBLA is all I can think of. It's a shame, such a good environment for a game.

There was a PSOne game called Treasures of the Deep that was an underwater game, too.  And don't forget Ikachan.

I still have no idea what I am supposed to do in Ecco the Dolphin. I'm not sure if I ever tried Ecco Jr.

Ecco Jr. lets you play as an Killer Whale. I totally went for that.

I tried it again on the Sega Genesis Collection for PSP and got a little farther, but then got stuck. What do you do with those crystals? I tried everything!

I played a bit of Altered Beast years ago, had no clue what I was doing, died a bunch of times and gave up after about half an hour or so. Maybe I'd do better if I played it now, but I doubt it.

It's a pain. It's just too unfair. Damn blobs in part two jump on your head and you have to shake them off.

Me like RayStorm. EVen if I end up getting the XBLA HD re-release of this game I wouldn't mind having it again in this collection, if it's even offered on the Xbox release. I've already resigned myself in buying Vol 2 twice to ensure I get all teh games offered.

If you wanted Taito Legends 2 on PC, I believe it has all the games.
