Wolfenstien is good? Don't tell me this. It's like a 40GB download on PC. I guess I'll have to dot it now.
Mein Weekend Der Over

Der Der Der. Yea, I don't know German from Ob. What's Ob you say? Well, it's a special language that is best expressed in this video lesson.
I have a friend at work that speaks Ob fluently and I asked him to teach it to me. I'm horrible at languages however, and even this simple language trips me up. But I ask him to speak it frequently, because it makes me giggle like a preschooler.
So my weekend was full of angst, sturm und drang, and lots of Wolfenstein: The New Order. What do I like best about it? The fake record album collectibles. Each one is a German spoof on some famous 60's act and has real music in a cheesy German style. The covers are amazing to me as is the music. I just hope there's a soundtrack containing all these songs, because I want them.
You might have heard these songs used in the trailers to the game. There was The Animal's "House of the Rising Sun", Martha and the Vandella's 'Nowhere to Run", and John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" all done in German and performed really stiffly. They're just hilarious. In the game, there are other songs you can find by picking up vinyl albums on the ground and then play them in the stats screen. One of them is clearly a Beetles spoof with the iconic fab four walking across Abbey Road on the cover. You can see and hear them all on the Wolfenstein web site.
Other than that note of hilarity, the game is pretty awesome. It's a true action shooter like I've played ever since Doom in '95. I'm playing on the default difficulty and far into the game where it does get challenging, but if you use your weapons right, you can survive it. I'm a couple hours from the final levels. My friend has finished it already. I got frustrated and angry on Sunday and bugged out half-way through the day, otherwise I would've finished it too. My angst did have some possitive results though as I ditched my old TV and chair at my friend's place and replaced them with my home TV and chair, which I hardly use at home anyway. The picture and sound is much better and the chair is not half broken, giving me neck fatigue.
And speaking of neck fatigue, this game has lots of "neck-stabby" as I call it. That is, while you do stealth, you invariably cut and stab throats. it's a little grotesque but stealth is sometimes a good strategy, although in this kind of shooter, it's not at all required to get past any level. It helps though as you are invariably rushed by many enemies, and a few less means your job gets easier.
The dialog in this game is better than I expected for a run-and-gun shooter. It's funny and serious alternately, and all the characters are handled with some care. Usually that's overlooked in games like this.
So I'm thoroughly enjoying this game. There are lots of collectibles I'm trying to get along the way and there are audio logs too. Clearly these guys at Machine Games have learned a lot from great shooters of recent past like Bioshock; atmosphere and interesting dialog are well taken care of here. The overall story is pretty good too, feeling like something like The Dirty Dozen except you're all twelve of the heroes.
And that's all he wrote for this weekend of gaming goodness. Bye y'all.
