Starting tomorrow is the Too Many Games Convention at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Phoenixville, PA, which is not in the city but in the suburbs. This convention is like practically in my back yard, and it's gotten bigger and bigger every year, but I haven't planned for it again, and so won't be going. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!!! Let's look at what I'm going to be missing and then maybe I'll buy tickets for next year.
First off, Retronauts is going to be there on Friday hosting a panel. That's the podcast from the 1UP days that got a kickstarter to revive it and it worked. Bob Mackey hosts it now and Jeremy Parish is almost always there along with some others. I caught Kat Bailey there too one episode. The panel will consist of Jeremy Parish, Bob Mackey, and Ray Barnholt. Anyway I was really excited to hear about this except that now I'm going to miss it.
The Angry Video Game Nerd has had a panel there for several years now and he'll be there again this year. I want to hear how his movie is coming along. Last time his panel was recorded and I got to watch it at home, but I really wish I could be there.
The video game music cover band Powerglove is going to be there. That would be fun to hear.
There's going to be a screening of the movie version of the play by Cameron McNary Of Dice and Men (not to be confused with the book about the history of D&D by David Ewalt by the same name, which I read and is great btw). The screenplay was written by McNary and Francis Abbey and is being shot by Cavegirl Productions. It is described as High Fidelity meets Dragonslayer. Oh boy, I want to see that!
Some popular video game youtubers who will be there are AlphaOmegaSin, Billy and Jay "The Game Chasers", Shane Luis, and my new found favorite THE SPOONY ONE! There will also be voice actor Stuart Zagnit who was Professor Oak in the Pokemon animated series. I know that character from Pokemon Snap. Ah man, the people I'm missing at this show!
There's going to be a burlesque show with performers in cosplay outfits. Wha? FIrst I've heard of that kind of thing. Oh my.
There will be an Afterparty for those who buy the ticket for the whole weekend where there will be a band (Uncle Gubsy and the Snowdogs - don't know them but the references in the name are funny and gross), a DJ battle and a Angry Video Game Nerd 10th Anniversary show. I think $100 for the whole weekend isn't bad.
FInally there's a lot more panels, venders selling game stuff, arcade games, tournaments, table top gaming, and an Indie game showcase featuring a long list of developers.
At the beginning of this year I wrote down every gaming convention down on my calendar. I thought that if there was one con I should go to it would be this one since I wouldn't have to stay over anywhere, but no, I've neglected to get tickets. Well, I guess it's that I'm still struggling with career stuff, busy with improving my health, and trying to get out of debt, that I haven't had much time to think about taking off from work to go to a con. Oh well, I'll try to make plans for the next one, or maybe I'll crash the party on Sunday. Who knows.
Next time I'll cover it. I kinda wish I had a Pixlbit T-shirt to wear to it. Or maybe, my incredible Crackdown Agent cosplay outfit complete with breakaway upper armor to show off my burly pecks at the burlesque show! Um, sans pecks, I'm not quite in shape yet. But the outfit's a go!
I can't wait for SGC now. That expo sounds like fun. I'd love to see Retronauts.
Speaking of SGC, I got Spoony to autograph my copy of The Cinema Snob Movie (Snob being my personal favorite TGWTG guy) and he even retweeted me about it. Cool guy. Damn skinny. Like "holy shit are you ok, man?" skinny. Pretty sure Brad (Snob) is too.
Man, if I had the money, I'd follow games cons like dead heads follow the Grateful Dead. It'd be weird, but it'd be fun. There'd be lots of blog matterial for me to write too. I gotta start going to the ones in my area at least. Gotta network a little bit too. Been thinking about games publishing as a career lately.
I just became aware of the awesomeness of The Spoony One. I'll roll a virtual 20 sided die to see if I save against shame. 17. Oh thank god. I'm safe.
