Zombie Outbreak!

My friend's Xbox 360 hard drive stopped reading discs today so we couldn't play EDF 2025. With a closer look, we saw that it was full of. . . ZOMBIES!!!

The first thing I did when my friend's 360 wouldn't read discs was look up prices of new and used Xbox 360s. The cheapest that Gamestop sells is the old type 360 refurbished, 20 GB, for $99. If I ran out and got that, my friend could just swap in his 250 GB drive and be golden, I thought. I considered too that it would be wise to get an extended warrantee. I think it was $30 for 3 years last time I looked. Not bad, and if there's anything that goes wrong, and with the older 360's that's almost gauranteed, they give you a new one no questions asked. But I didn't do it because I went to Cooptimus.com to look up games we both had digitally that had co-op and found Dead Rising 2. This was one of the Games with Gold freebees a while back and we both had it, so that's what we played.

Dead Rising 2 isn't as much fun as I wanted it to be. The combat is slow and clumsy and the time limits on missions are completely frustrating. You're given a huge mall full of stuff to fashion as weapons, clothes to wear, and stuff to break and they ask you to hurry up and find some soul in danger. "Leave me alone", I say, "and let me explore and mess around". Anyway we pretty much failed the main and side missions over and over and finally ignored them to run willy nilly around the mall finding things to combine into new crazy weapons to dispatch more zombies in more humerous ways. I want this game to drop all sense of story or time limits and be a giant sandbox of zombie destruction.

              goblin

A Goblin mask plus car battery equals a shocking good time.

My favorite weapon combo so far is the Goblin mask combined with a car battery. You put the Goblin mask/battery on a zombie and watch as electricity jolts it and any zombies around it. The Goblin mask draws zombies to it too, so it gets real messy real fast. Eventually the zombie wearing the hat falls down and you have to run in and grab it to put on another one. I found a T-Rex mask as well, but couldn't figure out what to combine it with.

One advantage of combining weapons into super weapons is that you gain more XP by using them. They don't last forever though and soon you have to make another one. You can solve this by carrying more than one of them or by having a magazine in your inventory that boosts weapon durability, although I haven't found that particular magazine yet. Your inventory is pretty limited to start. I think it was three items (weapons, food, or magazines), but when you level up you get more.

            pjs

These are the red PJs I wore, but not the hat or shoes.

You can change your shirt, pants, shoes, hat, or glasses by going into stores and just putting them on, coming up with some really wacky outfits. I had a one-piece panjamas on with space boots, a motorcycle crash helmet, and a medical mask. This carries over into cutscenes as well which adds to the hilarity.

Playing co-op online works pretty well, but the guest doesn't gain progress in the story. As I've mentioned, after a while, neither of us cared about the story and we just went pell mell throughout the mall, spanking zombies, and finding maintenance rooms to craft new weapons.

I don't know how much more we'll play of this tomorrow. I'm thinking a little more and then try out Dead Island which was also another Games for Gold freebee a while back. Today was a possible bumber but the zombie outbreak saved the day. Yeah zombies!

It was fun to watch my brother Jeff play the Dead Rising games on 360.  They were really more silly than scary.  I like the fact that the goblin mask is making a reference to Blanka from SF2.  I also like the fact that you can wear a Servebot head.

Oh yeah. Blanka. I didn't catch that but it did look familiar somehow.

The fact that you use it to electricute zombies made me think it was a Blanka reference.

Oh, it's totally Blanka. Dead Rising is full of Capcom game references.

Even the newer 360's go all pear-shaped.  I'd bought mine during holiday 2013...and not 3 month's later the discs couldn't be read. I sold the hard drive and controller and said to hell with it.  Prior to that, I'd had one red ring on me, and then another stolen in a home burglary.

I wrote off Microsoft after that. =)  I may in the future snap up another hard drive and controller and just use my 360 for digital only games....but we shall see!

I think you guys will have a blast with Dead Island...it's definitely geared toward co op!

I have the slim now and it's been fine for several years so far. I got a 3 year warrantee at gamestop which seemed like a good idea. If it breaks, they just give me another one. My friend uses his for dvd movies as well, so he's really worked that thing good. I've been trying to install disc games now just to save the drive from working too hard. That's the one thing about 360's, they're fragile.

I'm keen to know how you got a 250 GB drive in a launch model 20 GB. I could be wrong but the 250 GB is an internal drive and the launch model had a drive that snapped to the side of the console. The biggest drive they made for that one was a 120.

My first 360 was a launch model. Fortunately for me I had it until 1 month after the warranty ran out when it red ringed.

I bought an Arcade to replace it and just installed my 20 GB drive on that.

Four years ago I bought an HP Laptop and got a free black 4GB 360 with it. I received a $100 gift card as a present and used that to buy a 250 GB drive.

Even though my current 360 has very few hours on it the DVD drive makes an awful noise every once it a while.

I thought as much. My friend told me it was a 250, but I was pretty sure it was a 120, because I gave it to him when I got my 360 slim. So right you are, it's a 120.

So you can install an internal drive on the 360 slim? I was wondering about that.

Yes but as usual it's got to be a Microsoft proprietary drive. You can't use a standard laptop drive like you can in the PS3. They come in 250 or 320 GB

I figured as much.

I tried to get into the Dead Rising series but for the life of me I can't. I don't know why I don't like it given hwo I should with the zombie killing and the weapon customizations. I guess I'm not one for sandbox titles. That would make sense since I can't get into Crackdown or the Infamous series. You'd think zombies could fix that but I guess not.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Dead Rising series. DR2 improves on everything that was in the first game, but it keeps those lousy timed missions. The missions are also unclear. I mean, I'd go to a location and not have a clue what to do there. While you're trying to figure it out, zombies are crowding all around you so you can't think straight. By the time you've cleared enough of them away, the timer's gone off on the mission. If they only got rid of the time element, it would be great.

Love Dead Rising 1 and 2.  I think the time structure is what makes these games stand out, and I personally wouldn't have it any other way. There was really nothing quite like the first game when it came out.  It was the chaotic, sandbox arcade game that State of Emergency tried to be but failed at.

My friend used to play State of Emergency all the frickin' time. I have the words "Penalty on civilians killed." etched in my brain now.

I think the time structure could be cool, if you really focus on it. Seems to me you have to have a clear plan when you enter the mall in order to get those missions done on time. Thing is, I just wanted to craft some weapons and make a mess.

Always been curious of the Dead Rising games. I have the 2 from Games with Gold (back before my membership expired) but I haven't played it 'cause I heard so much complaining about the time limits. That and other games lol.

My friend and I had fun once we stopped trying to do missions and just reeked havok.

I started Silent Hill: Book of Memories btw. I've got to finish the first mission to unlock multiplayer the game tells me.

Egads, I better that too then!

I'm thinking I'll play that on Sunday 5-8 pm EST.

Hmm, that could be problematic for me if I have to work overtime on Sunday (which is a possibility right now). I will let you know! I did play through the first level, though, and unlocked the rest of the menu on the title screen. I tried to open the multiplayer just to see what hoops I'd need to jump through, and I had to download a big update. Make sure you do that ahead of time if you haven't yet Smile

Oh ok. Maybe I'll do that tonight or early on Sunday.

I thought that game was slow and clumsy too. I do want to jump back into it...eventually, because of the make your own weapons.

Once my friend and I got started on Dead Rising 2, time just flew by. We started at 6pm and when I looked up it was 11pm. We usually stop at 10pm.

Almost makes me wish EDF 2025 had a few unlockable zombie maps. lol. That could have been fun. Could you imagine Zombie King Kong or Zombie Godzilla? Tongue Out

Maybe they do. There's several DLC packs available right now. I haven't read the details on them though.
