Remember the movie The Seventh Seal where Max von Sydow plays chess with Death? Well, I played board games with The Old One today. Those who know what I'm talking about. . . know.
With dual wielding, I could take out both these asshats.
So, when I got to my friend's place he was playing Wolfenstein. Not the new one. The original on Xbox Live Arcade. I watched him for a bit as I downloaded Dead Island and Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, two games I thought we would get to today. As I watched him play, I recalled Wolfenstein: New Order and the place where you could play the original Wolfenstein. It was the original but with some gameplay elements of WNO like the ability to lean, take cover, and dual wield. It got me thinking, what a great way to update an old classic! I mean, you can mod a game to whatever you want it to be, but how about just adding in modern conveniences like what I just mentioned, or doing what Brutal Doom did with Doom - it's Doom, but with even more gore and bloody executions. Brilliant! I'd love to see modern tweaks to all sorts of old school games like that.
Love me trains.
As I finished downloading more zombie action, and thinking nervously about having to start Demon's Souls again for the Pixlbit Club, I began to get a hankering for board games. Ticket to Ride is my favorite on Xbox Live. It's about trains. . . Ah, so soothing. . .You place train pieces on a map of the US or Europe and try and beat the other player to the best routes between cities. My friend and I played that for a good long time. I saw one other person on there playing it. He friended me soon after. I'm glad this game is still running online. I could play this game all day.
Get ready to die. It's DEMON'S SOULSSSSSSS!!!
But that was not to be because at 5 o'clock I realized I had to face Demon's Souls. I still suck at this game, but I just love the atmosphere, graphics, and overall feel. It's so beautiful in a kind of morbid way - describe it like "magnificent desolation" or more like "gorgeously grim".
I built a Knight character (how could I not) and played the prologue and then the Nexus and then the Boletarian Palace. I got farther than I did the last time I played, but not that much farther (I didn't even make it to the dragon in the Palace). I picked up the Bastard sword you get once the first trap is sprung. I tried to use it everywhere two-handed, but it's not very useful in small passageways because, realistically enough, it hits the walls. So I switched back to the Long sword and shield when I was in confined areas and then back to the two handed Bastard sword when in the open.
I saw lots of ghosts flit by me as I played. Were some of them Pixlbits? Who knows but none of them attacked me. I thought maybe you could comunicate with the ghosts in some way, but I guess you have to actively summon someone fully into your game to do that.
I had a demon of a time trying to make parries and blocks. I was playing very cautiously but that didn't work too well for me, so I started playing very aggressively and used blocks and parries only when I knew I could pull them off. This worked better.
I'm not sure how I'm supposed to gather souls if I can't return to the Nexus to use them. At one point I had 1500 souls, but I didn't want to backtrack all the way back to the Nexus, so I kept going, hoping for some safe area to come to, but there never was; the level just kept going and eventually I was surprised by a group, or missed a block on a fire weilding foe, and got killed. Rince and repeat. Start back at the beginning and do it all over again and hope you get to your blood stain before anyone else does and steals your souls.
After a while I gave up trying to keep my souls and just tried to get farther in the level. Each time you respawn, all the enemies come back in just the same places and respond to you in just the same way. It makes it easier to replay, but a couple of mistakes along the way could, and did, get me killed before I could get to where I'd died before.
At 8:00 I was pretty darn beaten. I'd gotten a little farther than last time and I was a little more comfortable with the battle system. Next week, I may either continue with my Knight, or switch to a different build to see how that plays. We'll see.
[In doing this blog, I peeked at a walkthrough and was surprised by how many secrets I'd missed just in the first areas of the Palace. Without looking at the walkthrough too closely, I think I'll do some exploration next time and return to the Nexus often].
Catan is fun!
The rest of the night I eased my soul by playing Catan on XBLA with my friend Mark (aka MADKRAMMER). This game is known as Settlers of Catan in meat space and it's basically a resource managment game. You set up settlements on hex grid that represents various resources and build roads and more settlements. Each turn you get resource cards and can spend them to build your structures to control more resources. All along you are trading with the other players. There's a points system and the first to 10 wins. My friend and I played with two AI players online. It's a blast. Catan rules win or lose.
