My buddy Mark and I played EDF 2025 co-op for a little while today. Not for very long though. It was a bit of a grind playing with that weapon level cap. Plus I was still without great armor and died a lot. So eventually we each went back to single player and worked on various goals in the game. He was going after achievements for numbers of kills of different enemy types, and I just wanted to get my Air Raider up to 1000 armor points, which is also an achievement.
I started on level one and played at the highest difficulty. I decided if I died in a level, I would move the difficulty one level down. I got through the first two levels on Inferno but on level 3 had to move it down to Hardest. Then around level 10 or so I moved it down to Hard. I did pretty well at the that difficulty for a while. I think it was late in the 20s that I had to move it down to Normal. Then for the levels passing level 30, I cruised along quite nicely. It's cool that there are no weapon or armor level caps in single player. I can use a level 40 weapon even while playing on Normal which is a big help.
I had to swap weapons around for almost every level to match up well with whatever foe I was battling. For big robots I would bring out the Limpet Sniper Rifle, an air strike and a rocket launcher truck. For levels with Retiarius spiders I'd be sure to have a tank because they can't rope you in while you're in it and the cannon works well against them.
For underground areas, I would use my trusty Limpet Chain Gun and a thing that looks like a small tire which slides along the ground like a hockey puck, searches for enemies and then sprays shrapnel at them when it finds them (I forget the name of it). I'd have a vehicle too but there's no calling in vehicles in underground areas. Certain levels I'd use my bug-spray tank or my best mech. I discovered you can fly briefly with the mechs by holding down the analog stick or the "A" button.
I used a helicopter on one level and it actually worked pretty well. I had three drop ships above me, and I had to get to a roof-top to avoid the hoards of ants long enough to snipe the drop ships. The helicopter got me up there, and then I used it to mop up the ants and spiders once the drop ships were destroyed. I also used the helicopter to move around the large city map to pick up all the drops before finishing the level. It was a new helicopter and handled better than previous ones, but still not great. I noticed handling on the vehicles does improve dramatically when you get a higher level one. I got this higher level tank and it handled like a charm.
At the end of it all, I got to somewhere in the level 30s and had almost 800 armor, and Mark racked up several new achievements for enemy kills.
The other day I had picked up some new games that have campaign co-op that were cheap: Aliens Colonial Marines and Gears of War Judgment. Each were under $10 at Gamestop. It looks like we might take a break from EDF and see how Gears goes tomorrow.
