This really looks like an awesome game and I can't wait to play it when I have the chance and money. I'm also interested in the alternate history scenario they have there.

Goaty? No, no, no. It's GOTY!
"What are you doing in there." said in the creepiest way possible.
As I thought about all the games I played this year, I tried to remember things about them: EDF 2025's utter chaos, Borderland: The Pre-Sequel's humor, the emotions tweaked by Child of Light and Valiant Hearts; but when I think about Wolfenstein: New Order, a whole host of things came to mind.
The characters really stand out in my memory. I can see each one of them, and their particular personalities: the incredibly creepy Deathshead; the cruel Frau Engle and her freaky boy toy, Bubi; the relationship between Blazkowicz and Anya; Fergus's crankiness, Wyatt's inexperience, Max's devotion, Caroline's toughness and determination, and Set Roth's craftiness. These characters are still fresh in my memory six to eight months later.
From above or below. By stealth or by force. It's your choice.
That's not to say that's all. Every aspect of this game is well made. The levels are very well crafted and very different from each other. Many of them have multiple routes through them and, when they don't, you can still approach them in different ways, either by stealth or by guns blazing. The controls are perfect. The targeting is very accurate and you can quickly switch weapons without issue. You feel like you have perfect control over your actions. The sound is incredible. Weapons sound dangerous, and environments each have their own sound identity. The music is perfectly inserted into the game world, and the Nazi versions of 1960's pop tunes are just hilarious. And speaking of humor, there are many little moments of humor in the game that, at the same time, don't turn the game away from its serious and deadly tone. The ending (no spoilers) is not what you'd expect from a run-and-gun FPS like this and very dramatic.
Blazkowitcz is good with a knife, or two.
Added to all these elements is the feeling of playing the game. I still remember stealthing around with dual-weilded knives, both throwing them, and cutting throats in a variety of ways. It works really well. The enemy is neither too stupid nor too smart. If you sneak right, you get rewarded. You can probably play the whole game that way. But what would a Wolfenstein game be like without run-and-gun tactics? I still clearly remember dual weilding rocket launchers. I used them in the asylum where you get surrounded. I bathed in the spray from the bursting blood balloons. It's gross, but hilarious at the same time. You really feel powerful in such moments.
So what more can I say? This is my most fondly remembered game of the year. I'd go back and play it again anytime.
