My Top Ten Achievements

I just passed 50k gamer score on Xbox live. Technically, I have about 3k more than this, but that 3k was on my old gamertag. Still, 50k is a nice number that makes me want to reminisce about my favorite achievements going back all the way to 2007.

1. The One Free Bullet (Orange Box) – Beat Episode One firing exactly one bullet. Grenade, crowbar, rocket, and Gravgun kills are okay! – 40. I loved this achievement because it did exactly what achievements should, which is encourage you to play the game in a different way. This achievement turned me on to the usefulness and versatility of the Gravgun. It also added a lot of tension to the game and made you innovate. Best chievo ever!

2. Walking Death (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) – Beat the game on Hard Difficulty – 50. This was the final achievement to get me a perfect 1000 in this game. The last boss was Weapon XI (Deadpool) and he’s a total pain. I cheered and jumped up and down in excitement after the long battle with him; probably the best I’ve felt finishing a game.

3. Henry VIII (Fable III) – You’re Henry the Eighth you are, you are. Well, of course you’re not, but a good try nonetheless. – 10. In this achievement you had to get married 6 times and kill two of them, just like Henry VIII. I vividly remember taking my sixth husband (I was playing a female) to the Dweller Camp located in the wintry Mistpeak Mts. On the very edge of the romantic hot tub-like hot spring, I let him have it with my giant hammer. He flew head over heels into the steaming water. The chievo popped up and I had a great laugh.

4. Complete the game to 100% (Lego Star Wars TCS) – 100. It took me about 60 hours to do everything in this, The Complete Saga edition, which is two games in one: Lego Star Wars: The Video Game and The Original Trilogy. Probably the most difficult part was the lava levels where you have to jump across sinking platforms and grab a mini-kit before time runs out.

5. Confiscator (Crackdown) – Impound all flagged vehicles and store them in the Agency Garage – 40. My favorite occupation in Crackdown was stealing cars for the Agency. I’d have to search all over the tri-city area for certain vehicles, chase them to a stop, pull the driver out, and drive away without getting the car destroyed by pursuing gang members. So much fun!

6. Who Wants to Live Forever (The Cave): Got everyone out of the Cave without dying once – 40. This is very tricky. It’s very easy to die by accident in this game: you can make a wrong jump, slip off a ladder, or time a defensive move incorrectly amongst many other pitfalls. There are seven characters, each of which you have to take through the whole game without dying. I had The Knight on my final run. I saved him for last since he seemed the most difficult. I managed to do it on one try though, which surprised and thrilled me.

7. Sploded! (Pinball FX2) - You Sploded 100 times on the Ms. Splosion Man table. – 5. This is a silly one like the next one. When you get this, the table goes crazy with explosive graphics and Ms. Splosion Man is screaming her head off. I couldn’t help laughing.

8. Beat Golden Poo Snake (Blue Dragon): You defeated the rare monster Golden Poo Snake30. These are like the humorous versions of the slimes in Dragon Quest. They appear randomly at certain locations in the world, and you need special items to beat them because they run from you. There are harder achievements to get in this game, this one just made me laugh.

9. Idiot (Risen) – Fell to death 3 times – 10. This one just summarized my experience with this series that I found really difficult. I got so frustrated, I started making really simple mistakes. I just had to laugh when this popped up.

10. Elementalist (Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel): Had an enemy frozen, corroded, ignited and electrocuted at the same time – 20. This is pretty tricky, but it can be done on a boss that takes a lot of damage. You just have to switch weapons quickly or combine grenades and weapons with different elemental effects. Getting three is easy, four more difficult. The elemental effects are really colorful and exciting to look at and going for this really made me pay attention to them.

Onward! Luckily achievements carry over to Xbox One and so, it’s possible I’ll get to 100k sometime in the future. I don’t think it’ll be soon though. It’ll probably be at the end of the current generation.

I remembe when I reached 50,000 Achievement Points!  I managed to get all the achievements in a few games like Pac-Man CE and Pac-Man: CE DX, Banjo-Tooie, Sam & Max, Dig Dug, and a Doritos free game that had dinosaurs in it.  I did get a lot of achievements in games like Soul Calibur 4 and 5, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, and Portal 2.

It's fun to get all the achievements for a game, but most are really hard to get 100%. There's always that one achievement that just takes too much time to get or is crazy hard.

So far, my favorite achievements that I've gotten were Slap in the Face - Kill someone with a fish in Sleeping Dogs, and Crab Cakes - Kill FeeFee the Crab in Tomb Raider.

Ha ha those are funny. I gotta play that Tomb Raider game sometime. Can you steal cars in Sleeping Dogs? I want to do more of that.

Oh, can you ever! And armored trucks, too!

Oh man. That one's on my list then.

whoa, you can do that in Fable?

Yea, that was a crazy one. I liked finding the gargoyles that insulted you in Fable 2. I think there's an achievement for that, but I never did finish Fable 2.

As a rule, I don't go chasing Trophies or Achievements. Most of the requirements for them are boring as hell or require you to start the game from scratch because they're one-time-only deals.

My rule is they have to be fun. Once an achievement quest gets too tedious, I'm out. I've also started to chase them less. I just like looking at them so I'm aware during gameplay. I like to see them pop up naturally, rather than after doing some special trick.

LOL at the Henry VIII achievement. And I like when I get an achievement for failing. Makes me feel like at least I made SOME progress. lol #ParticipationTrophies

I like that they tease you with calling the falling achievement "Idiot". Somehow I think it's due to the German dev team on Risen. They're just tough hombres.

Cool I'm too lazy to get any achievements beyond NormalTongue Out

Most of the time, games are just way too tough on the highest difficulty level. I try them anyway just to get a feel of what it's like, but I rarely finish the game. Something about X-Men Origins Wolverine really clicked with me though. I loved the fighting system in that game. I could play that one all day.

Nice. I do miss Xbox acievements. They're on Steam, but they're just not quite the same... I remember ME2 was fucking easy to get achievements on. I beat the game oncve on normal and had 800 gamerscore from it.

I really need to get back to the ME series. I finished the first one, but the others still sit in my collection untouched. I wish I could do a top ten trophies. I just haven't played enough games on my PS3 yet to have a good list.

#9 was kind of a cop-out as far as achievment goes.

I know you've got better than that.

I have a pretty long list. I worked really hard to get the Silverback leveled up in Gears of War 3 so I could get the "What Does This Button Do?" achievement for 500 Silverback rocket kills. That was a fun one and probably deserved to be on this list. Horde mode was a blast.

There was a trophy in Eat Lead: The Return of Max Hazard for pausing the game lol. I rented that trash just for the trophies. Ugh. Never again. I can understand the appeal of it, but don't really bother with them unless it's something I really like and am bored.

I watched my friend play that. It had some funny humor that has stuck with me. When Matt is almost out of ammo on his water gun he says, "I'm down to my last squirt." I still use that line all the time while I'm gaming.

It's only now that i'm entering the worls of achivements, so I don't have a lot quite yet. Over Steam among the rarest (and proudest) i've achived include BEGINNING (watch the hidden cutscene in Bit. Trip Beat), Well look at you (insert the code to play as Tofu Boy in Super Meat Boy), U-Turn (in Team Fortress 2, behead someone you couldn't see and wasn't the target in a sword charge with Demoman) and lastly, the singing Vortigaunt easter egg in Half-Life 2.

Those are really cool. I love how so many games have implimented some kind of achievement-like system. I think it's a great design concept for any game. I'm pretty sure I found that singing Vortigaunt too. It's been a while though. My memory of it is faint.

Congrats on hitting 50K! I remember that part in Lego Star Wars. That was a pain. I got it in my first try on the PS2 (when the games were separate) but had a tough time on the PSP version.

Thanks. Once I found out where the canister was on that level, I really had my work cut out for me getting to it. I did it co-op with my friend Mark too. It's tricky with two doing it at the same time.

I'm suprised you remember 10 of them! I'd be hard pressed just remembering 5!

the onlye achievement that pops to my head right now is the 0pt one from TMNT arcade where you fall down the manhole 3 times.

Also I don't think I even have 50K in achievement points.

What? Stop looking at me like that!

Well, I did a blog on this a while ago, so some of them were still on my mind, and Xbox.com lets you view all your achievements and the date you got them. I just read through them until I found ones that triggered a memory.

I just read this article that says the average gamerscore is 11K. That was in 2011 though, so maybe it's 17k now.
