PS2 Done?

Posted on 03/07/2026 at 10:55 PM | Filed Under Blogs

I haven't played Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo myself but I know it's more like Puyo Puyo rather than Tetris Attack (which I have played a lot of). In Tetris Attack the blocks rise from the bottom of the screen and you move a cursor around to swap blocks horizontally. I love not being at the mercy of whatever drops from the top of the screen. I don't think there has been a new game like that since Planet Puzzle League on the DS. That game was clearly influenced by the presentation of Lumines and lacked any sort of personality of its own. But at least Pokémon Puzzle League is available on NSO (I think Tetris Attack is as well) and those are pretty endlessly replayable for me.

I love those Taito Legends collections. I was playing through them for Blog-a-Day and never did finish the second collection.

Just to clarify, SSX 3 is the one that let's you go all the way down the mountain in one go. SSX Tricky has the self-contained levels but I think it is the most fun to play bewteen the two of them.

That's great to hear! And the previews there look really good.

The only Killzone game I have played is the one on the Vita and it was really good. The campaign wasn't long but it had lots of replay value. There were different missions for each level that would change up how you approached things. And they had a perk system that made me think of Call of Duty multiplayer...but for the single player campaign. I really enjoyed it.

Shadow Labyrinth is not a high priority for me...but there was this episode of Retronauts about it with someone how understood all the Namco references—the stuff way deeper than Pac-Man—and grokked the game for what it is and I was really intrigued and then the game had a big price drop. So...hopefully I'll try it out one day...

I'm guessing you can safely skip the first Battle Network game and start with the second one...but I couldn't bring myself to do that when it was sitting right there in the collection. Be stronger than I was!

I'm not aware of Drill Dozer ever being ported off the GBA, so I'm curious how you played it.

Hoo boy, the GBA is so great! The Castlevania games are my favorites, though I think Circle of the Moon is the weakest of the bunch by quite a bit. But let me mention a couple games not on your list.

I believe I've sung the praises of Astro Boy: Omega Factor before. Crafted by the mad geniuses at Treasure, it is a superb action game. Gunstar Super Heroes, the sequel to their classic Genesis game, is also quite good.

Drill Dozer is a great action platformer by Game Freak. Great music, fun gameplay, and the cartridge had a built-in rumble feature.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong is unlike the Lemmings-esque series that followed it but is rather a true sequel to Donkey Kong '94. It doesn't quite reach those heights but it's a good time all the same.

That's cool! I'll try to give it a listen. I guess you know you have made it as a podcaster when you start guesting on other podcasts lol.

I played RE4 on the GameCube when it first came out and I was not expecting the chainsaw decapitation! I had never experienced something like that in a game before. I remember thinking it was weird that you couldn't move and shoot at the same time but it did work really well to up the tension.

Yay for Extreme-G3!
