You're arguing for more paced and gradual emotional development in a game that's essentially an action platformer,Blake. Personally I'm glad Lara toughened up quick so I didn't have to play through a big chunk of the game almost entirely helpless. On the flip side you could argue "Okay,then it shouldn't have been there at all if done poorly!" but considering Lara's training before the event in question, she would probably snap to attention quicker than someone with no experience in the first place.
There are many parts in the game I'd call foul on (Lara survives some ridiculous falls with nary a bruise) but never underestimate the dark-side of human instinct. When pushed into a corner and when we ourselves and our loved ones are threatened we will do very callous and cruel things to our enemies just to live on.
I'm not saying Lara's progression is perfect but I've seen worse characterization in about 70% of the action movies I've watched in my life time. lol.
