BaD #17: Plump Pop

I never saw this in arcades, but I certainly do remember it on the Taito collection.  I'm a sucker for cute Breakout style games.

But what IS Klonoa?  Nobody knows.  He's an Animaniac.

What's Tail Concerto?  WHAT'S TAIL CONCERTO?!?  Well, OK, it was a pretty obscure game.  Anyway, Tail Concerto was a PSOne game that came out at the tail end of 1999, right about the time I was about to graduate from college.  It was made by Bandai and published by Atlus, and it's one of the first games I ordered online!  It's a 3-D platformer starring a cartoon police dog named Waffle.  Waffle lives in a world of floating islands populated by cat and dog people.  Waffle's job is to stop a group of cat pirates and their kitten gang by piloting a walking mech that blows bubbles.  He traps the kittens in the bubbles and captures them with the mech's floppy arms.  It kind of plays like Mega Man Legends in a way.  The game has a Miyazaki style story with animated cut scenes.  It's a very charming game and I recommend you look it up and watch some videos about it, too, maybe.  Believe it or not, Tail Concerto actually got a sequel on the DS that's even more obscure.  It was called Solatorobo and while it was still a good game, it wasn't near as charming as Tail Concerto.

The way things are going, I don't think any of us will be able to retire.

I saw this when it first came out on the PlayStation and kind of wanted to play it, but I never did.  Still was burnt out on mascot platformers even though Klonoa renewed my faith in the concept by then.  Speaking of which, someone told me the music in Punky Skunk sounds like Klonoa's music.  Klonoa kind of looks like a skunk, too. He's the fourth lost Animaniac. :)

For some reason I wanted to play Ys 9 on the PS4.  I'm glad I did because you get items if you have save data from Ys 8, which I also have on PS4.

My favorite character in Ys 9 is Raging Bull because she has pink hair and is really strong.

To this day, 1943 is one of my favorite shooters of all time.  I downloaded it on the Switch because, hey, free game.  I tried to request codes for the rest of the packs in Capcom Arcade Stadium, but was denied.  Sometimes I get to review games I request, and sometimes I don't.  I hope I can review Ghosts N Goblins Resurrection, but I haven't heard back from them yet so I'm not getting my hopes up.

I never played either of these, but would've liked to.  Can't play all the games out there, you know?

I do have favorite characters in both these games, though.  In Rival Schools, there is a school nurse who was kind of cool.  And in one of the Bust-A-Groove games, there's a character named Burger Dog!  They should team up and have their own game! :)

Yeah the SNES is when I really got into RPGs.  FF4, FF6, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2, and many more.  It's weird that I'm not into RPGs hardly at all now.  My younger self wouldn't have believed it!

I reviewed this for The Dallas Morning News back in the day.  I remember the opening cinamatic being kind of funny, but the rest of the game was pretty bland as far as I can remember.  The only 3-D platformers on the PlayStation I really liked were Spyro, Tail Concerto, and the Mega Man Legends series, but really 3-D platforming on the PlsyStaiton didn't get N64 caliber until Ape Escape came along (also one of my favorites).  And that was nearly five years after the system launched!
